Overview - ISO/IEC 14476-5:2008 (ECTP-5)
ISO/IEC 14476-5:2008 specifies the Enhanced Communications Transport Protocol - Part 5: N-plex multicast transport. Also published as ITU‑T Rec. X.608, this standard defines a protocol for many-to-many reliable multicast over the Internet where IP multicast is supported (IPv4/IPv6). It covers session control, token-based send-right management, and tree-based error control for scalable, reliable multicast data delivery. ECTP-5 can be provisioned over UDP and includes packet formats, procedures and system parameter values.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Session control and management
- A single TC-Owner (TCN) manages connection creation/termination, participant join/leave, and token allocation.
- Participants are TS-users; a TS-user becomes a sending TS-user (SU) only when granted a token by the TC-Owner.
- Error control and reliability
- Tree-based loss recovery using a two-layer logical tree structure: intra-group (per local group) and inter-group (per-source LO trees).
- Control trees derived from the logical tree support retransmission and loss recovery.
- Logical tree adaptation driven by packet delivery status and periodic probes to optimize recovery paths.
- Protocol specification
- Detailed packet formats, procedures, and parameter values for connection management, tree management, data transport, token control and RTT measurement.
- Defined packet types include (examples): CR / CC (connection create/confirm), JR / JC (late join), DT / RD (data/retransmission), TGR / TGC (token get request/confirm), NACK / ACK, and various tree-management messages.
- APIs and annexes
- The standard includes an application programming interface (API) overview and state-transition diagrams to help implementers.
Practical applications
- Many-to-many multicast services requiring reliable group delivery, e.g.:
- Teleconferencing (audio/video/messaging with multiple simultaneous senders)
- Multi-user online games and collaborative virtual environments
- Distributed simulation, live group streaming, and collaborative editing where coordinated send rights and loss recovery are essential
- Designed for deployment over networks with IP multicast, leveraging IGMP and multicast routing.
Who should use this standard
- Protocol designers and implementers building multicast transport stacks
- Application developers for group conferencing, gaming, and collaborative systems
- Network equipment vendors and middleware providers supporting multicast reliability
- Network architects and researchers evaluating many-to-many reliable multicast solutions
