ISO/IEC 14476-6:2010 provides a specification of QoS management for accomplishing a desired quality of service in n-plex multicast transport connections. For this purpose, it describes the QoS management operations in n-plex multicast transport connections such as QoS negotiation, QoS monitoring and QoS maintenance. ISO/IEC 14476-6:2010 is an integral part of ECTP-5 (ITU-T Rec. X.608 | ISO/IEC 14476-5). All of the protocol components, including packet formats and protocol procedures specified in ITU-T Rec. X.608 | ISO/IEC 14476-5, are also valid in ISO/IEC 14476-6:2010.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14476-6:2010 - “Information technology - Enhanced communications transport protocol: Specification of QoS management for n-plex multicast transport - Part 6” specifies Quality of Service (QoS) management for n‑plex multicast connections as part of the Enhanced Communications Transport Protocol (ECTP). Published jointly with ITU‑T Rec. X.608.1, this standard defines how a single TC‑Owner (TCN) and multiple TS‑users negotiate, monitor and maintain QoS for a shared multicast data channel. It is an integral complement to ECTP‑5 / ISO/IEC 14476‑5 and reuses the protocol components, packet formats and procedures defined there.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Roles and control model
- TC‑Owner (TCN): central connection manager responsible for creation/termination, token management and arbitration.
- TS‑user / SU (Sending TS‑user): participants requesting tokens to send multicast data.
- QoS operations
- QoS negotiation: exchange of control packets where the TCN proposes target QoS parameter values, TS‑users may propose modifications, and the TCN arbitrates final targets. Negotiated targets can feed network resource reservation mechanisms.
- QoS monitoring: periodic feedback from TS‑users via control packets (e.g., Connection Status Reports) to track parameter values and connection health; monitoring data can be reported to applications and used for billing/statistics.
- QoS maintenance: rate‑based congestion control and corrective actions such as data rate adjustment, connection pause/resume, troublemaker ejection and termination triggered by monitoring results.
- Protocol components
- Base header, QoS parameters, QoS extension elements, error bitmap element, defined packet types and packet formats.
- Timers and operational variables guiding QoS control behavior.
- Interworking and implementation
- Includes implementation considerations and an annex on interworking scenarios (e.g., with RSVP).
Practical applications and users
ISO/IEC 14476‑6:2010 targets designers and implementers of controlled multicast systems that require deterministic QoS guarantees, including:
- Real‑time conferencing and collaborative applications
- Multi‑player online gaming backends requiring tokenized send control
- IPTV and managed multicast media distribution with billing needs
- Network equipment and middleware vendors implementing ECTP stacks and QoS control
Network architects, protocol engineers, software developers and standards compliance teams will use this specification to ensure consistent QoS negotiation, monitoring and maintenance across n‑plex multicast deployments.
