Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14772-1:1997 specifies the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) - a standardized, text-based file format for interactive 3D graphics and multimedia with UTF-8 encoding. Part 1 defines the functional specification and UTF-8 character encoding for VRML files, describing how files represent time-based 3D worlds, multimedia objects, behaviors and interactions in a device-independent manner. The standard targets distributed environments (for example, the World Wide Web), enabling composition, extensibility and reuse of 3D content.
Key topics and technical requirements
- File format semantics: Each VRML file defines a world coordinate space, explicit 3D/aural objects, hyperlinks and behavior definitions.
- Node-based scene graph: Built-in node types (geometry, sensors, scripts, grouping, navigation, etc.) form a hierarchical scene graph supporting composition and inclusion.
- Event model: EventIn/EventOut, event cascades and an execution model describe how interactions, sensors and scripts exchange events.
- Sensors and interaction: Geometric and environmental sensors (e.g., touch, proximity, time) generate events for interactivity; Script nodes are activated by events.
- Extensibility and prototyping: Mechanisms allow new node types and browser-specific extensions while promoting interoperability.
- Distributed features: Inlining, hyperlinking and compact syntax support integration of multiple VRML files across networks.
- Character encoding: UTF-8 encoding is specified and mapped to ISO/IEC 10646, ensuring multilingual file content and interoperability.
- Device independence: The standard specifies abstract functional behavior only - it does not mandate screen resolution, input devices or other implementation-specific details.
- Conformance guidance: Normative references and annexes support implementation and testing practices.
Applications and users
- 3D content authors & authoring tools: Create and edit VRML scenes for web, educational content, simulation or multimedia presentations.
- Browser and engine developers: Implement VRML interpreters/renderers, event handling, scripting and networked scene composition.
- Tool integrators & conversion utilities: Convert from other 3D formats to VRML and assemble large distributed worlds via inclusion/hyperlinks.
- Academic, engineering and visualization teams: Deploy interactive visualizations for scientific, architectural, training and entertainment use.
- Standards and interoperability testers: Use the specification to validate conformity and cross-platform behavior.
