Cancels and replaces the third edition (1986). Specifies the structure of 8-bit codes and 7-bit codes which provide for the coding of character sets. The codes specified here are designed to be used for data that is processed sequentially in a forward direction. Use of these codes in strings of data which are processed in some other way, or which are included in data formatted for fixed-length record processing, may have undesirable results or may require additional special treatment to ensure correct interpretation.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 2022:1994 - Information technology - Character code structure and extension techniques - defines a framework for structuring 7‑bit and 8‑bit character codes and the extension techniques used to call up additional character sets and control functions. This fourth edition (1994) replaces the 1986 edition and focuses on interoperable code elements, escape sequences, and conformance rules. The standard is intended for data processed sequentially in a forward direction and warns that other processing models (e.g., fixed‑length records or non‑sequential parsing) may require special handling.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Common code elements: Defines common elements used by both 7‑bit and 8‑bit codes so an 8‑bit code can be transformed to an equivalent 7‑bit code and vice‑versa.
- Character sets and control functions: Classification and formal description of graphic character sets, control function sets, combining characters, and single control functions.
- S‑bit and 7‑bit code structure: Layout of code tables, invocation mechanisms for character sets, and rules for shift functions (locking and non‑locking).
- Escape sequences & code identification: Syntax and semantics of escape sequences, designation functions for identifying and selecting character sets (including DRCS - dynamically redefinable character sets) and code identification functions.
- Conformance and device requirements: Definitions of full and limited conformance, requirements for originating and receiving devices, and rules prohibiting use of reserved or unregistered coded values.
- Transformation rules: Procedures for transforming between 8‑bit and 7‑bit representations while preserving meaning.
- Code announcement & switching: Mechanisms for announcing available code structure facilities, delimiters, and designating other coding systems.
Applications and who uses it
ISO/IEC 2022 is used by:
- Software and firmware developers implementing terminal emulators, text renderers, and communication stacks that must support multiple character repertoires.
- Protocol designers and standards authors who need standardized escape sequences and code‑identification methods for international data interchange.
- System integrators and archivists handling legacy 7‑bit/8‑bit text data to ensure correct interpretation and conversion.
- Manufacturers of input/output devices (printers, terminals) and libraries managing control functions and code switching. Practical benefits include reliable multilingual interchange, interoperability between environments using 7‑bit and 8‑bit encodings, and minimized conflicts when systems interoperate.
