However, any such services that are configurable on a per connection instance basis, will be modeled in the context of the connection service itself. Network Address Translation (NAT) and Realm Specific (RSIP) are examples of such services. The series of ISO/IEC 29341 publications defines an architecture for pervasive peer-to-peer network connectivity of intelligent appliances, wireless devices and PCs. It is designed to bring easy to use, flexible, standards-based connectivity to ad-hoc or unmanaged networks whether in the home, in a small business, public spaces or attached to the Internet.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 29341-8-11:2008 specifies the Layer 3 Forwarding Service as part of the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) Device Architecture, focusing on Internet Gateway Device Control Protocol. This international standard defines an optional service dedicated to managing all Internet Protocol (IP) and Layer 3 packet forwarding functionalities within network gateways. It supports flexible, standards-based connectivity across diverse network environments such as homes, small businesses, and public spaces.
Designed under the umbrella of the ISO/IEC 29341 series, this standard facilitates pervasive peer-to-peer network connectivity by enabling intelligent appliances, wireless devices, and personal computers to communicate efficiently. Layer 3 forwarding services configured on a per-connection basis, such as Network Address Translation (NAT) and Realm Specific IP (RSIP), are handled distinctly within the corresponding connection service for granular control.
Key Topics
-
Layer 3 Packet Forwarding Services Addresses all IP routing and forwarding activities necessary for data packet movement across network interfaces within a gateway device.
-
Default Connection Service Identification Establishes a unique reference to a default WAN connection instance (e.g., WANPPP or WANIP connections) represented by a two-tuple string combining device UUID and service ID. This allows an Internet Gateway Device to manage default data routing intelligently, including dial-on-demand scenarios.
-
Service Type and Modeling The service is identified by the UPnP URN
urn:schemas-upnp-org:service:Layer3Forwarding:1and is modeled to comply with UPnP Device Architecture 1.0. State variables and associated actions (e.g., setting or retrieving default connection services) facilitate dynamic control and monitoring. -
Integration with UPnP Internet Gateway Device This Layer 3 Forwarding Service is designed to be part of the root device
urn:schemas-upnp-org:device:InternetGatewayDevice, ensuring compatibility and interoperability within the broader UPnP device ecosystem. -
Eventing and Actions Supports event-driven updates and control actions to maintain synchronization between devices and applications managing network resources.
Applications
-
Residential Network Management Allows smart home routers and gateways to provide automated management of IP routing, improving connectivity and network reliability for consumer devices.
-
Small Business Networking Supports seamless configuration and forwarding capabilities, simplifying network administration in SME environments.
-
Public and Ad-hoc Networks Enables flexible and dynamic routing control for wireless access points and gateways serving public spaces or temporary networks.
-
Internet Service Provider (ISP) Equipment Facilitates advanced management of Layer 3 forwarding services, including NAT traversal and RSIP, improving customer premises equipment (CPE) functionality.
-
Device and Application Integration Provides a standardized interface for software and hardware developers to integrate Layer 3 routing functions within broader UPnP-enabled solutions.
Related Standards
ISO/IEC 29341-8-11:2008 is part of the ISO/IEC 29341 series, which encompasses a comprehensive set of UPnP device and service architecture standards. Related components include:
