ISO/TR 17671-5:2004 gives general recommendations for the welding of clad steels by means of appropriate arc welding processes and electroslag strip cladding. It is generally applicable to all clad steels and is appropriate regardless of the type of fabrication involved, although the application standard may have additional requirements. Non-ferrous claddings, such as titanium, tantalum, zirconium and their alloys are not covered by ISO/TR 17671-5:2004. ISO/TR 17671-5:2004 covers welding of cladding deposits as well as welding of the transition zone(s), when existant, between parent metal and cladding. These transition zones are metal combinations of non-alloyed ferrous parent metal with high alloyed stainless steels, nickel alloys or other non-ferrous metals. The mechanical and physical design of the joints is not covered by ISO/TR 17671-5:2004. Methods of testing and acceptance levels are not included because they depend on the service conditions of the fabrication. The corrosion resistance of the cladding depends on many factors and is not part of ISO/TR 17671:2004.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/TR 17671-5:2004 - "Welding - Recommendations for welding of metallic materials - Part 5: Welding of clad steels" - provides practical, informative guidance for the welding of clad steels using appropriate arc welding processes and electroslag strip cladding. This Technical Report is informative (not normative) and is based on EN 1011-5. It covers welding of cladding deposits and any transition zones between parent metal and cladding (e.g., ferritic steel to stainless steel or nickel alloys). It does not cover non‑ferrous claddings such as titanium, tantalum or zirconium, nor does it address mechanical joint design or generic acceptance/testing criteria (these depend on the application standard).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of application: Applicable to most clad steels and fabrication types; excludes certain non‑ferrous claddings.
- Cladding processes: Recognizes hot roll cladding, explosive welding, welding surfacing, combined methods and electroslag strip cladding.
- Consumable selection: Emphasizes compatibility of filler metals with parent and cladding metals; attention to dilution effects and alloying element gains/losses.
- Dilution & ferrite control: Recommends minimizing dilution where possible and measuring ferrite number (FN) per ISO 8249 when required.
- Welding procedures: Requires welding procedure specification (WPS) and qualification per ISO 15609-1 / ISO 15607; when testing is required, ISO 15614-1 applies.
- Joint preparation & welding practice: Advises joint forms (see ISO 9692-4), preference for mechanical preparation, cutting guidance, and tack/run-on practices.
- Single- and double-side welding: Details root run placement, back shielding for single‑side welds (ISO 14175), and recommendations for buttering and multi‑layer deposits.
- Thermal control: Guidance on preheating measurement (ISO 13916) and cautious approach to post‑weld heat treatment (PWHT) because of differing cladding/parent metal responses.
- Post‑weld cleaning: Recommends brushing, shot blasting (iron‑free media), grinding with non‑ferrous abrasives, pickling or electropolishing as required for corrosion performance.
- Handling & repair: Protect cladding from contamination, avoid hard stamping, and follow reconditioning guidance where damage impairs service.
Practical applications
- Fabrication and repair of corrosion‑resistant linings, cladded pressure vessels, piping, storage tanks and process equipment in chemical, petrochemical and power industries.
- Selection of welding consumables and development/qualification of WPS for cladded components.
- Guidance for fabricators, welding engineers, NDT/QA inspectors and materials engineers dealing with dissimilar metal joints and cladding overlays.
Who should use this standard
- Welding engineers and procedure developers
- Fabricators and repair shops working with clad steels
- Quality/inspection personnel and welding supervisors
- Designers specifying fabrication requirements (in conjunction with application standards)
