EN ISO 3452-6:2008 / ISO 3452-6:2008 provides specific requirements for non-destructive penetrant testing (PT) carried out at low temperatures (below +10 °C). It complements the general penetrant testing principles and material testing rules given in ISO 3452‑1 and ISO 3452‑2 by addressing effects of cold on penetrant materials, process times and product qualification. Developer: non‑aqueous wet (solvent‑based) developers are preferred; spray cans should be kept at ≥10 °C to ensure proper spray; solvent evaporation should occur within 3 minutes (use gentle warm air if needed).

Reference blocks and test conditions

Use ISO 3452‑3 reference test blocks; tests must be performed in realistic climatic conditions (climatic room or outdoors) to avoid condensation artifacts.

Safety and equipment

Follow local health/environment regulations. Take precautions when using heaters and ensure protective clothing and gloves that still allow testing tasks.

Personnel

Operators should be certified and knowledgeable about low‑temperature PT considerations (see ISO 9712 / EN 473).
