Overview
EN ISO 5149-4:2025 - Refrigerating systems and heat pumps: Safety and environmental requirements - Part 4 (ISO 5149-4:2022) provides requirements for safe operation, maintenance, repair and the recovery, reuse and disposal of refrigerants, refrigerant oils, heat transfer fluids and parts of refrigerating systems. Published by CEN as the European adoption of ISO 5149-4:2022, this standard aims to minimize risks to people, property and the environment from improper handling, contamination and refrigerant emissions. It does not cover motor vehicle air conditioners constructed to product standards such as ISO 13043.
Key topics and requirements
The standard addresses practical and technical topics essential for compliant service and environmental protection:
- Operation: Requirements for clear operation instructions and documentation.
- Personnel: Training and instruction of operating and service personnel to reduce safety and environmental risks.
- Maintenance & repair: Procedures for routine maintenance, repair work and safe handling of components to prevent leaks and contamination.
- Change of refrigerant type: Planning and execution guidance when retrofitting or converting systems to different refrigerants.
- Recovery, reuse and disposal: Rules for recovery, testing, reuse, reclaiming and disposal of refrigerants and oils, including documentation and handling protocols.
- Transport, transfer and storage: Requirements for safe transfer, transport and storage of refrigerants to prevent releases and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Recovery equipment: Performance, operation and maintenance criteria for recovery and reclaim equipment.
- Annexes: Practical guidance such as draining oil, specifications for recycled refrigerant, handling/storage, in-service inspection and guidelines for repairs on equipment using flammable refrigerants.
Practical applications
EN ISO 5149-4:2025 is used to:
- Ensure safe, environmentally responsible maintenance and service of refrigeration and heat-pump systems.
- Define procedures for refrigerant recovery and reuse to meet regulatory and corporate sustainability goals.
- Provide manufacturers and service organizations with baseline requirements for documentation, training and equipment selection.
- Support environmental compliance, leak prevention, and reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions from refrigerant handling.
Who should use this standard
- HVACR engineers and system designers
- Service technicians and maintenance teams
- Equipment manufacturers and component suppliers
- Facility and safety managers
- Refrigerant reclaimers and waste handlers
- Regulators, inspectors and training providers
