IEC 62196-3:2026 is applicable to vehicle couplers with pins and contact tubes of standardized configuration, herein also referred to as "accessories", intended for use in electric vehicle conductive charging systems which incorporate control means, with rated operating voltage and current in accordance with IEC 62196-1:2025. This document applies to high power DC interfaces and combined AC/DC interfaces of vehicle couplers that are intended for use in conductive charging systems for circuits specified in IEC 61851-1 and IEC 61851-23. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2022. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) The content of IEC TS 62196-3-1 has been integrated into this document as normative Annex AA. b) increased ratings for all configurations; c) reference to new tests in IEC 62196-1:2025 (Clauses 34, 35, 36 and 37).
Abstract
Overview
EN IEC 62196-3:2026 is a European standard developed by CLC for the safe and efficient conductive charging of electric vehicles (EVs). Specifically, it addresses the dimensional compatibility requirements for DC and AC/DC pin and contact-tube vehicle couplers, ensuring standardized interfaces for plugs, socket-outlets, vehicle connectors, and vehicle inlets. This third edition represents a significant technical revision, integrating content from IEC TS 62196-3-1 and expanding ratings for all configurations to support evolving high-power charging.
This standard is vital for manufacturers and stakeholders involved in the design and implementation of EV charging infrastructure, as it enables interoperability and safety across various charging systems operating under diverse conditions and voltage levels.
Key Topics
- Dimensional Compatibility: Specifies standardized dimensions for vehicle couplers featuring pins and contact tubes used in DC and combined AC/DC conductive charging. This focus ensures compatibility and interchangeability of charging equipment and vehicles internationally.
- High-Power DC and AC/DC Interfaces: Applies to equipment intended for use in high power DC interfaces and combined AC/DC interfaces, crucial for fast and ultra-fast EV charging stations.
- Thermal Sensing and Management: Addresses couplers and cable assemblies that incorporate thermal sensing or thermal transport systems, enhancing safety and reliability in high-power charging scenarios.
- Integration with Control and Communication Systems: Covers vehicle connectors designed for control means and communication circuits, supporting functions like pilot control, isolation monitoring, and auxiliary power.
- Environmental and Mechanical Requirements: Establishes the operational temperature range (-30°C to +40°C, with variations in some countries) and mechanical robustness, ensuring safe use in diverse climates and tough operating conditions.
- Reference to New Tests: Incorporates references to updated testing protocols in IEC 62196-1:2025 (clauses 34-37), reflecting latest advances in assessing thermal cycling, humidity exposure, misalignment, and contact endurance.
Applications
EN IEC 62196-3:2026 is essential for a wide range of practical applications in the electric vehicle ecosystem:
- Manufacturers of Charging Equipment: Provides clear requirements for designing compatible plugs, connectors, socket-outlets, and inlets for both public and private EV charging stations.
- Automotive OEMs: Ensures vehicle-side charging interfaces align with international compatibility standards, streamlining global vehicle deployment.
- Charging Infrastructure Providers: Supports the installation of interoperable charging points, reducing fragmentation across markets.
- Testing and Certification Bodies: Offers a framework for certifying couplers, connectors, and cables for compliance, safety, and performance.
- Urban Mobility and Fleet Operators: Facilitates the deployment of reliable, high-power charging stations critical for electric buses, taxis, and commercial EV fleets.
This standard is crucial for the continued growth of the EV charging network, enabling fast, safe, and reliable charging experiences for end users.
