Overview
EN ISO 13000-1:2021 - Plastics - Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) semi-finished products - Part 1: Requirements and designation - establishes a harmonized system for identifying and specifying processed, unfilled PTFE semi-finished products in multiple forms. The standard covers designation rules, fundamental property requirements, and the basis for ordering and testing semi-finished PTFE such as skived tape, skived sheet/film, moulded sheet, rods and tubes. The PTFE raw material is described in ISO 20568-1 and may be virgin, reprocessed or recycled; up to 1.5% pigment or colorant by mass is permitted.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Designation system: Codes and format for presenting PTFE semi-finished product types and properties to ensure consistent ordering and traceability.
- Product types: Identification as type P (as-processed), type S (stabilized) and optional type E (specified electrical properties).
- Mechanical and electrical properties: Primary designation based on tensile strength and percentage elongation at break; optional electrical property specification when required.
- Dimensional requirements and tolerances: Defined measurement conditions (23 °C ± 2 °C) and tolerances for thickness, width, length, diameter and length across product forms (skived tape/film, moulded sheet, extruded or moulded rod, various tube types).
- Other property requirements: Includes dimensional stability, density, hardness, colour and dielectric strength with test methods referenced to Part 2 (ISO 13000-2).
- Testing and specimen preparation: Properties are to be measured in accordance with ISO 13000-2 procedures.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers and processors of PTFE semi-finished products use EN ISO 13000-1:2021 to specify production tolerances, material types and labelling for supply.
- Purchasers and specifiers (OEMs, engineering teams) rely on the designation system to order materials that meet required mechanical and electrical performance.
- Testing laboratories and quality assurance units use the standard in conjunction with ISO 13000-2 to validate properties and conformity.
- Design engineers in industries such as chemical processing, electronics, aerospace, food and medical equipment benefit from clear PTFE product definitions for seals, linings, insulation, gaskets and components requiring chemical resistance and electrical insulation.
