ISO 13936-2:2004 is intended for the determination of the resistance offered by thread systems of woven fabric, to slippage at a sewn seam. The method described is suitable for all apparel and upholstery woven fabrics, stretch fabrics (including those containing elastomeric yarn).
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 13936-2:2004 specifies a standardized method for determining the slippage resistance of yarns at a sewn seam in woven fabrics using the fixed load method. Developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and adopted from ISO 13936-2:2004, this standard is crucial for assessing the performance and durability of textiles, particularly in applications where seams are subject to stress.
This method is applicable to all woven apparel and upholstery fabrics, including stretch fabrics made with elastomeric yarns. However, it is not suitable for industrial textiles such as beltings.
Key Topics
- Slippage Resistance: The capacity of woven fabrics’ thread systems to withstand displacement at seams under tension.
- Fixed Load Method: Utilizes a predetermined and constant load to test fabric seam openings, ensuring repeatability and comparability of results.
- Sample Preparation and Testing: Detailed instructions for selecting, preparing, conditioning, and stitching fabric specimens for accurate assessment.
- Measurement and Reporting: Methods for measuring the seam opening after load application and for reporting test outcomes, including calculation of mean slippage values.
- Scope Limitations: Designed for apparel and upholstery; not intended for heavy industrial fabrics.
Applications
The EN ISO 13936-2:2004 standard is widely used in the textile industry and quality assurance laboratories to:
- Apparel Quality Control: Assure that garments meet durability requirements and resist seam slippage during wear and laundering.
- Upholstery & Home Textiles: Evaluate fabric suitability for furniture coverings, curtains, and other household uses where seam strength is critical.
- Textile Development: Guide fabric manufacturers in material selection and construction for products requiring high seam integrity, helping to minimize fabric or seam failure in finished goods.
- Supplier Evaluation: Enable consistent evaluation of materials from different suppliers based on objective seam slippage performance.
- Standardized Product Labeling: Allow brands to communicate fabric quality and performance to regulators and end-users, supporting compliance with European and international requirements.
Related Standards
Implementation of EN ISO 13936-2:2004 is often complemented by other textile test standards and procedures, including:
- EN ISO 13936-1: Textiles - Determination of the slippage resistance of yarns at a seam in woven fabrics - Part 1: Fixed seam opening method
- EN ISO 13936-3: Textiles - Determination of the slippage resistance of yarns at a seam in woven fabrics - Part 3: Needle clamp method

Practical Value
EN ISO 13936-2:2004 helps textile professionals ensure reliable product performance, reduce claims relating to seam failure, and meet regulatory obligations in the European Union and beyond. By implementing this seam slippage resistance test, manufacturers, quality assurance laboratories, and retailers can deliver textiles that meet the quality expectations of today’s markets and maintain consumer confidence in their products.
