This document specifies three methods for testing the peel adhesion, peel strength and tensile lap-shear strength in order to evaluate the adhesive bond as well as the type, location and structure of failures of elastic adhesives on coatings. These methods are used, for example, for testing the assembly with respect to the bond of panes or built-on parts, such as plastic covers, spoilers, instrument panel covers, headlights, with coatings for automobile construction. The two methods of climatic exposure of specimens described herein are the condensation test and cataplasm storage. This document does not specify requirements for adhesives and coatings. NOTE The peel strength test (method B) for rigid car body construction adhesives is described in ISO 8510‑2. The tensile lap-shear strength test (method C) for rigid car body construction adhesives is described in EN 1465. Testing of rigid car body construction adhesives is generally conducted on small joint thicknesses, i.e. <1 mm.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 22970:2020 (ISO 22970:2019) - Paints and varnishes - specifies test methods to evaluate the adhesion of elastic adhesives on coatings. It defines three complementary mechanical test methods (peel adhesion, peel strength and tensile lap‑shear strength) and two climatic exposure procedures (condensation test and cataplasm storage) to assess adhesive bond performance and to identify failure type, location and structure. The document is intended as a laboratory test protocol; it does not set pass/fail criteria for adhesives or coatings.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Three test methods
- Method A - Peel adhesion (evaluation of bond and failure mode)
- Method B - Peel strength (quantitative peel force measurement)
- Method C - Tensile lap‑shear strength (shear/tensile joint strength)
- Climatic exposure options
- Condensation test (in‑cabinet condensation with heated reservoir)
- Cataplasm storage (wet exposure to simulate long‑term moisture contact)
- Test elements covered
- Specimen preparation and panel coating considerations
- Application of adhesive beads and joint configuration
- Curing, exposure sequences and test order
- Test apparatus requirements and measurement procedures
- Expression and reporting of results and failure classification
- Scope limits
- Focuses on elastic adhesives on coated substrates (common in automotive applications)
- Does not prescribe adhesive or coating performance requirements
Practical applications
- Routine and comparative laboratory testing of adhesive/coating combinations.
- Durability assessment for bonded assemblies exposed to moisture or condensation.
- Failure analysis to determine adhesive/coating delamination, cohesive failure or substrate damage.
- Typical use cases: bonding panes and built‑on parts such as plastic covers, spoilers, instrument panel covers, headlight housings and other automotive exterior/interior assemblies where coated substrates are adhesively joined.
Who should use this standard
- Automotive OEMs and suppliers performing qualification and durability testing
- Coating and adhesive manufacturers developing product formulations
- Test laboratories and quality control teams checking assembly bonds
- R&D engineers performing materials selection and failure investigations
