ISO 3164:2013 specifies the deflection limiting volume (DLV) to be used when performing laboratory evaluations of structures which provide protection to operators of earth-moving machinery as defined in ISO 6165.

Deflection-limiting volume (DLV): defined as an approximation of a large seated operator (per ISO 3411). Two primary forms:
- Orthogonal DLV (rectilinear approximation).
- Rounded DLV (orthogonal DLV with rounded corners to better represent head/shoulder curvature).
- Orthogonal top head plane (270 mm × 330 mm) used with the rounded DLV for FOPS testing.
Dimensions and tolerances:
- All linear DLV dimensions (as shown in the figures) have a tolerance of ±5 mm.
- Locating accuracy relative to the Seat Index Point (SIP) is ±13 mm (horizontal and vertical).
- Rotation accuracy is ±1°.
Positioning and references:
- The DLV is located with reference to the Seat Index Point (SIP) (ISO 5353) and aligned to a locating axis (LA).
- Rules for seat fore–aft adjustment: standard assumes 150 mm adjustment; if none, specific rear-boundary dimension is reduced (210 mm → 135 mm) or adjusted proportionally.
Permitted rotation during testing:
- For ROPS/TOPS lateral or longitudinal loading the upper portion of the DLV may rotate up to 15°; the portion below the SIP remains fixed.
- If machine components interfere, rotation is limited to the interference angle.
Scope notes:
- Machine controls normally positioned inside the DLV are not considered violations.
- Normative references include ISO 3411, ISO 5353, and ISO 6165.
