EN ISO 8291:2022 - "Vitreous and porcelain enamels - Method of test of self-cleaning properties (ISO 8291:1986)" specifies a comparative test method to evaluate the self-cleaning properties of vitreous and porcelain enamelled walls used in roasting devices, grills and baking devices. Drops of about 20–25 mg produced with pipette/burette/syringe (ISO 648 referenced).
Template with five holes (15 mm diameter) and spacing feet used to place drops from a height of 20 mm.

Thermal cycle: Specimens exposed in a ventilated muffle furnace (hot-air oven or baking oven) at 250 ± 10 °C for 1 hour then cooled to ambient (18–28 °C). Repeat cycles until gloss appears on at least three of five exposed areas.

Assessment and comparison:

Use a specially prepared reference specimen produced per ISO 2723.
If the difference in number of cycles to gloss between test and reference is ≤ 1 cycle, specimens are considered to have the same self-cleaning performance.
The method is comparative and partly subjective (visual gloss assessment); results can be affected by oven draught and oil composition.

Quality control note: When used for QC, coating thickness of test and reference specimens should not differ by more than 20 µm; self-cleaning enamels typically have coating thickness ≥ 150 µm.
