ISO 8988:2006 specifies three methods for the determination of the hexamethylenetetramine ("hexa") content of phenolic resins: a Kjeldahl method;direct titration with perchloric acid;potentiometric titration with hydrochloric acid.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 8988:2006 (ISO 8988:2006) specifies analytical methods for the determination of hexamethylenetetramine (commonly “hexa”) content in phenolic resins. Published by CEN/ISO, the standard defines three equivalent laboratory methods: the Kjeldahl method, a perchloric acid titration in acetone, and a potentiometric hydrochloric acid titration. It sets scope, reagent and apparatus requirements, procedures, expression of results and basic quality controls for routine testing and quality assurance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Three validated methods
- Kjeldahl method - measures total nitrogen (expressed as hexa). Applicable for hexa ≥ 0.5% by mass. Requires digestion in concentrated sulfuric acid with catalyst, distillation of ammonia, and back-titration. Performed in a fume cupboard (ventilation warning).
- Perchloric acid method - direct titration of one tertiary amine group in hexa using perchloric acid in acetone. Applicable for hexa ≥ 0.3% by mass. Perchloric acid handling warning: dangerous with organic matter.
- Hydrochloric acid method - potentiometric titration with HCl using solvent systems (butanol/ethylene glycol or acetone/water) depending on resin solubility. Applicable for hexa ≥ 0.3% by mass.
- Method limitations
- Kjeldahl is not suitable if other nitrogen-containing components are present.
- Perchloric and hydrochloric titrations require absence of other acidic or basic additives; if additives are oxidizable by perchloric acid, use the HCl method.
- Quality control
- Duplicate determinations required; repeat if duplicates differ by >5%.
- Kjeldahl reproducibility indicated (~0.30% by mass hexamethylenetetramine).
- Reagents and apparatus - specifies analytical-grade reagents and laboratory equipment (e.g., burettes per ISO 385, pH-meters, automatic burettes, Kjeldahl flasks).
Applications and users
- Who uses it: chemical manufacturers, phenolic resin producers, quality control laboratories, testing labs, R&D teams, and regulatory bodies involved in materials certification.
- Practical uses:
- Routine QC of phenolic molding compounds and resins to ensure correct hexa content for curing and performance.
- R&D and formulation control where precise hardener concentration impacts cure rate, mechanical properties and safety.
- Compliance testing where standardised analytical procedures are required for product specifications or contract verification.
