IEC 60477-1:2022 applies to resistors intended for use as laboratory DC resistors (hereinafter referred to as "resistors") comprising standard resistors, single or multiple resistors of accuracy Classes 0,000 05 to 10 and single or multi-dial resistors of accuracy Classes 0,000 5 to 10. This document does not apply to: 1) resistors which are intended for use solely as permanently mounted circuit components, 2) resistors used on alternating current or on pulsed current, 3) active resistors, 4) series resistors and shunts which are considered as accessories of electrical measuring instruments in the relevant IEC document (examples of these are as follows). IEC 60477-1:2022 cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 60477 published in 1974, and its Amendment 1:1997. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) extended the resistor accuracy classes; b) deleted the resistor accuracy class expression in parts per million (ppm); c) excluded the active resistor from the scope of this document; d) updated the terms and definitions according to new IEC 60050 series; e) changed the term "resistance decade" to "resistance dial" to cover the multi-dial resistors with other resistance step values; f) updated the intrinsic error to intrinsic uncertainty according to IEC 60359; g) added the limits of relative stability for resistors of classes 0,000 05 to 0,01; h) added the requirements of high voltage resistors; i) updated the safety symbols and requirements according to the new IEC 61010 series; j) updated the insulation resistance requirements of resistors; k) added the requirements of temperature coefficient; l) updated the temperature requirements for transport and storage of resistors.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60477-1:2022 is an international standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the requirements for laboratory DC resistors. These resistors are precision devices used primarily in calibration and measurement laboratories for accurate direct current (DC) resistance measurements. The standard covers standard resistors as well as single or multiple resistors, including single or multi-dial types, with accuracy classes ranging from 0.00005 to 10.
This 2022 edition replaces the original 1974 version and its 1997 amendment, introducing significant technical revisions to improve clarity, precision, and alignment with current technology and safety practices. Notably, it excludes active resistors and focuses solely on resistors intended for laboratory use, excluding those designed for permanent circuit mounting or AC and pulsed current applications.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Classification IEC 60477-1 applies specifically to laboratory DC resistors. It excludes resistors intended as permanent circuit components, those used with alternating or pulsed currents, active resistors, and instrument accessories like series resistors and shunts.
-
Accuracy Classes The standard extends accuracy classes from 0.00005 to 10, defining the performance and tolerance criteria for laboratory-grade resistors.
-
Terminology and Definitions Update Terms and definitions in the document have been revised according to the IEC 60050 series, reflecting current terminology in electrical measurements.
-
Intrinsic Uncertainty and Stability Intrinsic error has been updated to intrinsic uncertainty as per IEC 60359, and limits of relative stability have been added for the highest precision classes (0.00005 to 0.01).
-
Design and Construction It governs both single and multi-dial resistor configurations, with the term “resistance decade” replaced by “resistance dial” to accommodate varied resistance step values.
-
Electrical and Safety Requirements The standard updates safety symbols and requirements aligning with the IEC 61010 series. It also revises insulation resistance, temperature coefficient requirements, and stipulates conditions for transport and storage temperatures.
-
Markings and Information Specific requirements for information provision, labeling, and symbolic marking on resistors are detailed, ensuring traceability and user safety.
Applications
Laboratory DC resistors compliant with IEC 60477-1:2022 are critical components in precision electrical measurement setups. Their primary applications include:
-
Calibration of Measurement Instruments Providing stable, precise reference resistances for the calibration of voltmeters, ammeters, and ohmmeters.
-
Research and Development Utilized in laboratories for R&D to ensure accurate and reliable electrical measurements during experiments and prototype testing.
-
Quality Assurance Employed in manufacturing environments where stringent electrical measurement standards are necessary for product quality verification.
-
High Voltage Measurements The standard includes requirements for high voltage resistors, expanding their applicability in specialized test scenarios involving high potentials.
