Overview
IEC 62386-201:2015 is part of the IEC 62386 series that defines the Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) protocol for electronic lighting control. This Part 201 specifies particular requirements and a bus-system protocol for control gear associated with fluorescent lamps (device type 0). It is a technical revision of the 2009 edition and updates the structure of references and the test-sequence descriptions (now expressed as pseudo code). The standard assumes compliance with lamp controlgear requirements in IEC 61347.
Key topics
- Scope and purpose: Defines protocol and type-test methods for DALI control gear used with fluorescent lamps; not intended for production-line testing.
- Protocol structure: Transmission protocol, frame types, bit encoding and timing follow the general rules in IEC 62386-101 and IEC 62386-102, with device-type‑0 specific extensions.
- Variables and encoding:
- extendedVersionNumber uses format “x.y” (major x: 0–62 in bits 7–2; minor y: 0–2 in bits 1–0); current extended version is 2.0.
- deviceType default is 0 (device type 0 = fluorescent lamp control gear).
- Commands and control:
- Includes device-type-specific commands (e.g., Command 153 - QUERY DEVICE TYPE returns 0).
- Application extended commands for device type 0 are activated via Command 272 - ENABLE DEVICE TYPE 0.
- Electrical and power requirements: References general electrical specifications and interface power supply requirements in IEC 62386-101/102.
- Test procedures: Type-test sequences updated to pseudo-code format for clarity; procedures are intended for compliance verification and certification.
Applications
- Ensures interoperable, addressable control of fluorescent-lamp ballast and control gear in commercial and industrial lighting systems.
- Used by manufacturers to design DALI-compliant fluorescent control gear and to prepare type-test documentation.
- Applied by test laboratories and certification bodies to verify standard compliance and by system integrators to ensure device compatibility in DALI networks.
Who uses this standard
- Lighting control gear manufacturers (design and compliance)
- Test laboratories and certification authorities (type testing)
- Lighting system designers and integrators (specifying interoperable components)
- Building automation and controls engineers focused on DALI-based lighting solutions
