ISO 11110:2015 specifies the tests and requirements for devices used to determine the release moments of ski-bindings in retail sales, rental, and other facilities. It specifies requirements for the design accuracy, operation, maintenance, and calibration of the test devices used for determining binding release settings. For other requirements, see appropriate standards (e.g. standards on electronic measuring devices, safety of electrical apparatus, etc.). It is to be used in conjunction with ISO 9462 and ISO 8061.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11110:2015 specifies requirements and test methods for test devices used to determine the release moments of ski bindings in retail, rental and service environments. The standard defines design, operation, maintenance and calibration requirements so that setting devices deliver reliable, reproducible measurements of binding release in forward bending and torsional modes. It is intended to be used alongside ISO 9462 and ISO 8061.
Key topics and requirements
- Measured parameters: Devices must indicate peak release moments in at least forward bending and torsion (both right/left) and report values in Newton metres (Nm).
- Design & operation:
- Must completely release the boot from the binding and allow continuous observation during release.
- Apply quasi‑static loading: total release time 2–5 s and toe/heel speed ≤ 20 mm/s.
- Clamping should be as close as possible to the binding to avoid ski elasticity errors.
- Device must indicate peak value after the test.
- Accuracy & resolution:
- Resolution requirements: typically down to about 1 Nm for forward bending and ≈5 Nm (or 5% of the Recommended Operating Range) for torsion.
- Accuracy limits are defined relative to a reference device (specified percentage or fixed Nm thresholds depending on direction); individual test‑series limits also apply.
- Reproducibility: averaged reproducibility limit r shall not exceed 3%.
- Testing protocol:
- Tests conducted at standard atmosphere (ISO 554, 23/50).
- Use at least six commercial bindings/boots (or test soles per ISO 9838) mounted per manufacturer instructions.
- Measurement sequence: reference device → test device → reference device, with 7 measurements per direction; highest and lowest removed for evaluation.
- Reference device measurement tolerances are stricter (e.g., torsion error
