ISO 11177:2019 specifies product quality and testing requirements for inside and outside vitreous and porcelain enamelled valves and pressure pipe fittings used in untreated and potable water supply. The standard focuses on practical performance under real stress conditions - storage, transport, installation and operation - addressing mechanical damage, abrasion, corrosion and climatic exposure.

This document does not apply to chemical service glass-enamel or apparatus enamel. It is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories, procurers and compliance teams seeking validated methods to demonstrate enamel performance for drinking-water systems.

Exterior coating resistance to aggressive soils per DIN 50929-3 (soil Class III) with six-month laboratory and outdoor moist-soil exposure tests.

Mechanical damage tolerance: Defined impact (falling weight), scratch (ISO 15695) and abrasion (ISO 6370-1/2) tests followed by immersion in deionized water at 80 °C for three days; damaged areas must show no visible defects.

Climatic and UV exposure: Per ISO 16474-1/2 (Xenon-arc) under defined cycles; no corrosion, fading or loss of protective performance permitted.

Physiological harmlessness: Hygienic suitability for drinking-water contact is subject to national regulations where no international rule exists.
