Overview
ISO 11783-12:2019 - part of the ISO 11783 series for tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry - specifies the diagnostics services for the serial control and communications data network used on tractors and implements. The standard defines how Electronic Control Units (ECUs), sensors and actuators report diagnostic information across the network so an operator or service technician can identify, isolate and troubleshoot faults. This third edition (2019) updates parameter identifiers (SPNs) and references and moves some functionality parameters to an online database.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Diagnostic information messages and parameters: Control functions (CFs) must support the ISO 11783 diagnostic messages (see Annex B) and parameters (Annex A).
- Network information: Every CF must expose ECU identification (part/serial/manufacturer), NAME (per ISO 11783-5), software versions and compliance test data to the diagnostic user interface.
- Network statistics: Diagnostic tools should report bus load, CAN errors, message counts and, where hardware permits, average bus voltages measured over 250 ms to 5 s.
- Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): Active and previously active DTCs (suspect parameter numbers and failure mode indicators) and occurrence counts must be available; clearing previously active DTCs is supported when required.
- Functionalities reporting: CFs must report active and present functionalities (e.g., TC-GEO, TC-SC) and their generation/options; present-but-disabled vs present-but-unavailable are distinguished.
- Diagnostic protocol usage: Diagnostic messages are for troubleshooting only and shall not be used to configure run-time operation.
- Character set: ISO/IEC 8859‑1 (Latin‑1) printable characters are mandated for ASCII parameters.
- Service access: A service tool can connect via the diagnostic connector specified in ISO 11783-2 to use CF-specific protocols for deeper diagnostics.
