ISO 14895:2016 specifies the design, construction and installation of permanently installed galley stoves and heating appliances using fuels which are liquid at atmospheric pressure on small craft up to 24 m length of hull (LH according to ISO 8666). It includes open flame galley stoves, ceramic hobs, blown air heaters and water heating appliances. Cooking and heating appliances solely designed or intended as portable self-contained camping stoves or heaters are not covered. Other permanently installed cooking and heating appliances (such as solid-fuelled and liquid-fuelled natural draft stoves) are outside the scope of this International Standard and therefore covered by ISO 9094.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14895:2016 - Small craft - Liquid‑fuelled galley stoves and heating appliances is an international standard from ISO/TC 188 that specifies design, construction and installation requirements for permanently installed liquid‑fuel appliances on small craft up to 24 m length of hull (LH per ISO 8666). It covers open‑flame galley stoves, ceramic hobs, blown‑air heaters and water‑heating appliances using fuels that are liquid at atmospheric pressure (e.g., kerosene, diesel). Portable camping stoves and other appliance types (e.g., solid‑fuelled or natural‑draft liquid‑fuel stoves) are excluded and addressed elsewhere (for example ISO 9094).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Appliances installed permanently on small craft ≤ 24 m LH; excludes portable camping units and some other stove types.
- Fuel restrictions: Petrol (spark‑ignition engine fuel) must not be used for appliance fuel or priming.
- Installation and fuel system:
- Secure fastening of appliances and remote fuel tanks.
- Remote tank filling and fuel supply components positioned outside hazardous Zones (per ISO 9094).
- Fuel lines: solid drawn metallic piping or hoses meeting ISO 8469 / ISO 7840 requirements; minimize joints.
- Readily accessible shut‑off valves or electrically interrupting devices near remote tanks.
- Stove design and operation:
- Priming pans must be secured and contain fuel under 15° pitch/roll; drip pan depth ≥ 20 mm.
- Stoves must operate at craft pitch/heel up to 15° (30° heel for monohull sailing craft) - gimbals permitted.
- Utensil retention and oven door latches to prevent sliding/opening under heel/pitch.
- Pressurized integral tanks: relief valve settings and strength/testing requirements (release ≤ 2× vapour pressure at 60 °C; design and test factors specified).
- Heater design and safety:
- Heaters must be marine‑suitable, operable at 15° heel/pitch and equipped with overheat control.
- Combustion circuit leakage testing to prevent exhaust gasses entering heated air.
- Integral flame‑failure devices required; failed‑start designs must prevent fuel overflow.
- Temperature limits: heated air into habitable space ≤ 150 °C (measured at centre outlet); exposed parts protected from exceeding 110 °C; surfaces likely to be touched ≤ 85 °C.
- Marking and documentation: Durable labels, owner’s manual information (Annexes A & B), and installation/maintenance instructions required.
Applications and users
ISO 14895:2016 is used by:
- Marine appliance manufacturers designing liquid‑fuel stoves and heaters
- Boat builders and naval architects specifying equipment and installation
- Marine installers and surveyors verifying compliance and safety
- Regulatory bodies and flag states assessing small craft equipment
- Yacht owners/operators and maintenance personnel following safe operation and servicing guidance
