Overview - ISO 18541-5:2018 (RMI for Heavy Duty Vehicles)
ISO 18541-5:2018 is the heavy-duty vehicle part of the international series for standardized access to automotive repair and maintenance information (RMI). It adapts the approaches and provisions of ISO 18541-1 through ISO 18541-4 (originally for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles) to heavy duty motor vehicles and separately type‑approved engines/after‑treatment systems. The standard defines how vehicle manufacturers (VMs) and service providers manage, deliver and control access to RMI for trucks, buses, engines and related systems.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard addresses practical, technical and operational aspects of RMI for heavy duty applications, including:
-
Access control and administration
- User authentication, authorization and management for independent operators (IOs) and IO employees.
- Payment and licensing workflows for access to RMI.
- Recording and administration of access events, including security‑related RMI.
-
Vehicle and product identification
- Use of VIN, product identifiers and engine family identifiers for unequivocal identification of vehicles and engines.
-
Information retrieval and content
- Standardized navigation and selection methods (search by standardized terms, product structure, document IDs).
- Retrieval of information packages: workshop procedures, wiring diagrams, service bulletins, recall info, maintenance schedules, spare parts, labour times, special tools, and type‑approval documents.
-
Diagnostics and ECU management
- Vehicle diagnostics, DTC resolution, integrated diagnostics and procedures for updating/replacing/tuning modules (ECUs).
-
IT architecture and interfaces
- Conceptual IT architecture, implementation principles and external interfaces such as Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) and trust centre (certificate management).
- Technical infrastructure requirements: device types, hardware, operating systems, browsers, presentation formats and connectivity expectations.
-
Operational and conformance requirements
- System availability, performance, support, software co‑existence on IO clients, update/uninstall processes and conformance test cases.
- Functional user interface requirements and clusters of use cases (UC1–UC11) describing common workflows.
Note: Remote Diagnostic Support for heavy duty vehicles is a specific requirement but will be addressed in a future standard.
Practical applications - who uses ISO 18541-5
- Vehicle manufacturers (VMs) implementing RMI portals and access controls.
- Fleet operators and independent repairers needing standardized access to heavy duty RMI.
- Diagnostic tool and VCI manufacturers integrating with VM RMI systems.
- After‑treatment and engine suppliers managing type‑approved unit information.
- Regulatory bodies and compliance teams ensuring fair access to repair information.
