ISO 19065-1:2014 establishes a system of designation for acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA), acrylonitrile-(ethylene-propylene-diene)-styrene (AEPDS) and acrylonitrile-(chlorinated polyethylene)-styrene (ACS) moulding and extrusion materials, which may be used as the basis for specifications. The types of ASA, AEPDS and ACS plastic are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the designatory properties: a) Vicat softening temperature, b) melt volume-flow rate, c) Charpy notched impact strength, d) tensile modulus, and on information about composition, intended application and/or method of processing, important properties, additives, colorants, fillers and reinforcing materials.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19065-1:2014 specifies a standardized designation system for acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA), acrylonitrile-(ethylene-propylene-diene)-styrene (AEPDS) and acrylonitrile-(chlorinated polyethylene)-styrene (ACS) moulding and extrusion materials. It provides a structured way to identify composition, fillers, processing intent and key designatory properties so manufacturers, purchasers and laboratories can communicate material identity and basic specification requirements consistently. The standard is intended as a basis for specifications, not as a source of engineering or processing parameters.
Key topics and requirements
- Designation format: An identity block plus an individual-item block divided into five data blocks (separated by commas). The system aligns with ISO 1043 and ISO 11469 principles for generic identification and marking.
- Data block 1 (composition): Abbreviated polymer type (ASA, AEPDS, ACS) plus a code indicating polymer composition and any additional monomers.
- Data block 2 (fillers/reinforcements): Codes for filler type, physical form and nominal mass content (including mixtures).
- Data block 3 (processing & supplementary info): First letter indicates intended application/method of processing (e.g., injection moulding, extrusion); subsequent letters cover additives and characteristics (e.g., light stabilized, coloured, antistatic).
- Data block 4 (designatory properties): Encoded ranges for four essential properties - Vicat softening temperature, melt volume‑flow rate (MVR), Charpy notched impact strength, and tensile modulus - represented by fixed-format numeric codes separated by hyphens. Test conditions and specimen conditioning are referenced to ISO 6402-2 (e.g., VST specimen storage at 23 °C ±2 °C; MVR conditioning at 80 °C ±2 °C for 4 h).
- Data block 5 (optional): Additional specification requirements or properties to ensure reproducible processing or application performance.
- Scope limits: The standard excludes materials outside specified composition/impact limits (for example, materials with less than 10% acrylonitrile in the continuous phase or Charpy notched impact strength below specified minima).
Applications and practical value
- Standardizes material designation for product marking, procurement specifications, material data sheets and quality control.
- Helps specifiers and designers select appropriate ASA/AEPDS/ACS grades by comparing encoded property ranges and composition.
- Supports communication between compounders, moulders, extruders, testing laboratories, and purchasers to reduce ambiguity in material identity.
- Useful when drafting supplier contracts, technical datasheets or regulatory submissions where a clear, consistent polymer designation is needed.
Who should use this standard
- Polymer compound manufacturers and raw‑material suppliers
- Product designers and material engineers
- Quality assurance and testing laboratories
- Procurement teams and specification writers
