Overview
ISO 19932-2:2025 - Equipment for crop protection - Knapsack sprayers - Part 2: Test methods specifies the laboratory and field-oriented test methods used to verify the safety, performance and environmental requirements set out in ISO 19932-1:2025. It applies to lever-operated, compression and engine- or electric-motor-driven hydraulic knapsack sprayers carried on the back or shoulder with a nominal volume greater than 6.0 L, intended for use with plant protection products in agriculture, forestry and horticulture. It is not applicable to combustion engine-driven air-blast knapsack sprayers covered by ISO 28139.
Key technical topics and requirements
The standard defines test procedures, equipment and conditions for objective verification of knapsack sprayer performance and safety. Major topics include:
- Test liquids and equipment: use of clean water and specified test rigs (preconditioning device, shut-off device tester, strap/drop test devices, filling devices, pressure supply, weighing and measuring instruments).
- General test conditions: tests on a new specimen at 10 °C–30 °C and ≥30% relative humidity, assembled per manufacturer instructions.
- Functional tests:
- Spray liquid shut-off device reliability (endurance cycling under pressure).
- Spray liquid output and flow/pressure measurement.
- Load carrying straps and fixation points, stability and harness absorbency.
- Contents gauge/volume checks, filling rate and emptying behaviour.
- Pressure and leakage tests: adjustable pressure supplies and gauges to detect leak paths and structural integrity.
- Centre of gravity: procedures to assess stability when filled.
- Specific tests by sprayer type:
- Lever-operated sprayers: preconditioning, external surface deposit volume, total residual liquid, drop test.
- Engine/motor-driven sprayers: external deposit and residual liquid volume tests.
- Compression sprayers: volume and drop tests.
Annexes provide informative examples of test rigs and a model test report to support implementation.
Practical applications and users
ISO 19932-2:2025 is intended for organizations involved in the design, manufacturing, testing and regulatory assessment of crop protection equipment:
- Manufacturers - validation of design, quality control and compliance with ISO 19932-1 requirements.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - standardized methods for type approval and conformity assessment.
- Regulators and market surveillance - objective test procedures for safety and environmental enforcement.
- Service providers and large-scale users - procurement specifications, acceptance testing and maintenance verification.
Implementing these test methods reduces operator exposure, minimizes environmental dispersal of plant protection products and supports consistent, auditable compliance.
