Abstract
Overview
ISO 3543:2000 - "Metallic and non‑metallic coatings - Measurement of thickness - Beta backscatter method" - specifies a non‑destructive technique for measuring coating thickness using beta backscatter gauges. It applies to both metallic and non‑metallic coatings on metallic and non‑metallic substrates provided the coating and substrate have sufficiently different atomic (or equivalent atomic) numbers. The standard defines terms (beta particle, activity, saturation thickness, normalized backscatter), describes the measurement principle and apparatus, and addresses calibration and measurement uncertainty.
Safety note: beta backscatter instruments use radioactive sealed sources. ISO 3543 includes an explicit warning to follow applicable international and national radiation‑safety regulations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: Backscattered beta intensity depends largely on atomic number. Measured intensity lies between substrate and coating saturation backscatter values and can be related to coating mass per unit area or thickness.
- Normalized backscatter: Measurements are scaled between the substrate and coating saturation counts to produce a normalized value (0–1), often shown as a percentage, which is used to derive thickness.
- Typical response curve: Three regions are identified - linear (Xn ≈ 0–0.3), logarithmic (Xn ≈ 0.3–0.8) and hyperbolic (Xn ≈ 0.8–1) - with the logarithmic region offering the best relative precision.
- Apparatus requirements: A beta source of appropriate energy, a probe with apertures and detector (e.g., Geiger–Müller tube), and a readout calibrated to show counts, normalized counts, or converted thickness/mass‑per‑area.
- Counting statistics and precision: Because radioactive decay is random, adequate counting time is essential. ISO 3543 recommends aiming for at least 10 000 counts to achieve about 1% statistical standard deviation from counting alone.
- Material contrast: Measurement accuracy depends on the atomic‑number difference between coating and substrate - generally a difference of ~5 atomic numbers (or percentage rules given in the standard) is recommended.
- Other factors: Aperture condition and platen material, geometry, resolving time/dead time of detectors, and saturation thickness all affect uncertainty. The standard covers calibration procedures and reporting requirements.
Applications and users
- Applications: Cost‑sensitive or wide‑range thickness checks for plating and coatings where XRF is not practical; quality control of electroplated, anodized or conversion coatings; in‑process checks in manufacturing lines; field spot checks.
- Who uses it: Coating inspectors, quality engineers in metal finishing and fabrication, maintenance technicians, test laboratories and regulatory bodies focused on non‑destructive testing (NDT).
