Overview
ISO 53800:2024 - Guidelines for the promotion and implementation of gender equality and women’s empowerment - provides practical, organization-level guidance to develop capabilities and culture that advance gender equality and women’s empowerment. Applicable to all types of organizations (public or private, any size or sector), the standard offers a framework of resources, policies, tools and good practices to contextualize, promote and implement gender-responsive actions. It complements wider sustainability and social responsibility agendas (ESG) and aligns with SDG 5 (gender equality) and related ISO initiatives such as ISO 30415.
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 53800 is structured around actionable guidance rather than prescriptive technical specifications. Main topics include:
- Methodology and implementation steps: guidance on understanding terminology, analysing the current situation, stakeholder identification, prioritization and a continuous improvement approach (PDCA cycle).
- Data collection and analysis: qualitative and quantitative approaches to assess gender gaps and organisational status.
- Governance and labour practices: integrating gender equality into governance, HR and labour-related policies and practices.
- Activity and investment guidance: gender-responsive goods and services, sustainable procurement and gender-responsive budgeting.
- Internal and external communication: editorial content and communication actions to promote gender equality.
- Stakeholder engagement and partnerships: outreach strategies and collaboration with external actors.
- Grievance mechanisms and protection: Annex A provides guidance for developing grievance mechanisms to prevent, detect and respond to gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment (SEAH).
- Monitoring and indicators: Annex B includes indicators for comparative situations of women and men; Annex C offers good practices and practical examples.
Note: ISO 53800 does not cover specific relations with labour unions or country‑specific legal/regulatory compliance for gender diversity.
