Overview
EN ISO 53800:2025 (ISO 53800:2024) - Guidelines for the promotion and implementation of gender equality and women’s empowerment - provides practical guidance for organizations to develop capabilities, culture, policies and tools that advance gender equality and women’s empowerment. Applicable to public and private organizations of any size, sector or location, the standard focuses on inequalities rooted in gender role expectations and offers a framework for contextualizing, promoting and implementing gender-responsive practices. It is a guidance document (not a regulation) and specifically excludes country-specific labour-union/work-council relations and national compliance rules.
Key Topics

- Data collection and indicators: qualitative and quantitative methods to assess the organization’s gender status; Annex B provides comparative indicators for men and women.
- Governance and labour practices: governance roles, decision-making, recruitment, career progression, pay equity and workplace policies to reduce structural discrimination.

- Gender-responsive operations: design and delivery of goods and services, sustainable procurement, and gender-responsive budgeting to ensure external activities do not perpetuate inequalities.
- Stakeholder engagement and partnerships: approaches for outreach, involvement of internal/external stakeholders and multisector collaboration.
