ISO 5999:2013 specifies requirements for flexible load-bearing polyurethane foam of the polyether type. ISO 5999:2013 is applicable to flexible polyurethane cellular materials manufactured in block, sheet and strip form, in moulded and fabricated shapes, and as reconstituted material, used for load-bearing applications in general, but excluding carpet backing and underlay. It, thus, primarily relates to the quality of polyurethane foam used for comfort cushioning purposes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5999:2013 specifies requirements for flexible cellular polymeric materials - specifically polyurethane foam of the polyether type - intended for load‑bearing applications (comfort cushioning). The standard covers foams manufactured in block, sheet and strip form, in moulded and fabricated shapes, and as reconstituted material. It expressly excludes carpet backing and underlay. ISO 5999:2013 focuses on material quality, performance classification and test methods relevant to durability, hardness and safety for cushioning uses.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and material type
- Applies to flexible polyether polyurethane foam for load‑bearing cushioning.
- Formats covered: block, slabstock, contour cut, moulded, fabricated, reconstituted.
- Classification
- By Type (e.g., block, moulded, reconstituted) and Class (fatigue performance).
- Five fatigue classes: X (exceptionally severe), V (very severe), S (severe), A (average), L (light), defined by hardness loss ratio after a constant‑load pounding test.
- Grade by indentation hardness index (ISO 2439) - examples: 30, 50, 70 … up to 600 N ranges.
- Performance and physical requirements
- Open‑cell structure, freedom from defects that affect performance.
- Requirements for density, dimensions, hardness (indentation), resilience (ball rebound), compression set, tensile strength and elongation.
- Burning behaviour and ageing properties are specified and tested.
- Test methods
Applications and practical use
ISO 5999:2013 is aimed at materials used for comfort cushioning and load‑bearing applications, such as:
- Furniture and mattress components
- Seating pads and cushions for transportation or commercial seating
- Molded and fabricated cushioning parts where fatigue performance and comfort are critical
The standard helps manufacturers, product designers and specifiers ensure foam meets durability, hardness and safety expectations for end‑use comfort applications.
Who should use this standard
- Foam manufacturers and formulators (quality control and product specification)
- Product designers and OEMs (furniture, bedding, transportation interiors)
- Test laboratories and quality engineers (type and shipping inspection)
- Procurement and compliance teams specifying material performance
