Cancels and replaces the first edition (1979). Specifies a method for determining the dryness of a lot of pulp baled in sheet form and for calculating its saleable mass. Applicable to all kinds of pulp baled in sheet form. Does not apply to pulp baled in lots in slab form or to pulp baled in unitized lots.

Scope and definitions: Establishes how saleable mass is derived from gross mass and absolute dryness relative to a conventional commercial dryness (commonly 88% or 90%).
Sampling plan: Uses a sliding scale for the number of sample bales based on lot size (for example, 12–24 sample bales for lots up to 100 bales; sample counts rise with lot size up to hundreds or thousands as specified in the standard).
Sample selection: Sample bales must be representative and selected at random from the lot; certain bales (outer faces showing drying/wetting, damaged or previously sampled) are excluded.
Specimen sheets and test pieces: From each sample bale, five specimen sheets are taken at defined positions. Test pieces are triangular and may be cut by either:
- Alternative 1: constant area triangles, or
- Alternative 2: constant apex angle (24°).
Weighing and drying: Sample bales weighed on a scale (accuracy ~1/1 000). Test pieces are dried in a ventilated oven at 105 °C ± 2 °C to constant mass and weighed on a balance (accuracy ~1/5 000). Procedures to avoid moisture gain/loss during handling are specified.
Calculation: Saleable mass = gross mass × (oven‑dry mass / initial mass) ÷ theoretical commercial dryness (see standard for formal expression). Annex A provides a worked certificate of analysis; Annex B covers marking equipment.
