Cancels and replaces the first edition (1979). Specifies a method for determining the dryness of a lot of pulp baled in sheet form and for calculating its saleable mass. Applicable to all kinds of pulp baled in sheet form. Does not apply to pulp baled in lots in slab form or to pulp baled in unitized lots.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 801-1:1996 (ISO 801-1:1994) defines a standardized method for determining the saleable mass of pulps baled in sheet form by measuring lot dryness and calculating commercial mass. This part cancels and replaces the first edition (1979) and is applicable to all kinds of pulp delivered in sheet bales. It does not apply to pulps baled in slab form or to unitized bales.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Specifies sampling, specimen selection, drying and weighing procedures to determine dryness and calculate saleable mass for pulp lots.
- Definitions: Important terms include gross mass, oven-dry mass, absolute dryness, air-dry mass, theoretical commercial dryness (commonly 88% or 90%) and saleable mass.
- Sampling plan: Sample bales are selected using a sliding-scale sampling table based on lot size. Samples must be representative and the total number of sample bales is a multiple of six. Groups of six bales are formed for testing.
- Specimen selection and cutting: From each sample bale, five specimen sheets are taken at defined positions. Test pieces are cut as triangular sections using one of two accepted alternatives:
- Constant area pieces, or
- Constant apex angle (24°) pieces.
- Weighing and drying: Test pieces are stored to prevent moisture change, then dried in a ventilated oven at 105 °C ± 2 °C until constant mass is reached. Balances and scales with specified accuracies (e.g., scale accuracy ~1/1 000; laboratory balance sensitivity ~0.1 g and capacity ≥5 kg) are required.
- Calculation: Absolute dryness = oven-dry mass / initial mass. Saleable mass = gross mass × (absolute dryness / theoretical commercial dryness). Annex A provides a sample certificate and worked calculations; Annex B describes marking equipment for specimen positions.
Applications and who uses it
- Pulp producers - to issue certified saleable mass on shipping documents and invoices.
- Buyers and traders - to verify delivered mass and moisture basis for commercial transactions.
- Quality control and testing laboratories - to perform standardized dryness and mass determinations for compliance and dispute resolution.
- Logistics, warehousing and customs - to ensure consistent mass declarations for storage, transport and regulatory reporting.
Using EN ISO 801-1 helps ensure transparent, repeatable measurement of pulp mass on a commercial dryness basis, reducing disputes and facilitating international trade.
