ISO/IEC 14543-5-102:2020(E) specifies the system architecture and communication protocols of remote universal management profile to achieve intelligent grouping, resource sharing and service collaboration among different devices and controllers. The protocol features are: a) remote universal device discovery and management framework that includes connection methods and network architecture, device configuration interfaces, management message formats and message exchange flows; b) request/response message formats for four remote universal management profile device types: water heater, refrigerator, air conditioner, microwave. This document is applicable to remote access of water heaters, refrigerators, air conditioners, microwave ovens at home, office or other remote environments, to achieve universal management and interactions among these controllers and devices
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14543-5-102:2020 is an internationally recognized standard developed by ISO and IEC for information technology, specifically focusing on the home electronic system (HES) architecture. This part, titled “Intelligent grouping and resource sharing - Remote universal management profile” (RUMP), details the system architecture and communication protocols required for intelligent grouping, resource sharing, and collaborative service interactions among home devices. The standard enables remote and universal management of multiple device types, improving connectivity, interoperability, and automation in home and office environments.
Key Topics
-
Remote Universal Device Discovery and Management Describes frameworks for discovering, configuring, and managing devices remotely via robust networking methods and system architecture.
-
Unified Communication Protocols Specifies request and response message formats for several device categories, allowing consistent operation across water heaters, refrigerators, air conditioners, and microwave ovens.
-
Device and Controller Interactions Defines interfaces for device configuration, management message structure, and message exchange flows, ensuring seamless communication between users, controllers, and a variety of home appliances.
-
Network Architecture Compatibility Supports integration of both IP-based devices (like smart TVs or PCs) and non-IP devices (such as traditional home appliances) through agents and gateways, making the protocol suitable for diverse environments.
-
Service Collaboration Enables devices and controllers to work together efficiently, supporting operations like device registration, data sharing, and remote access management, all within a secure ecosystem.
Applications
ISO/IEC 14543-5-102:2020 is applicable to many real-world scenarios, particularly in smart home and smart office solutions:
-
Remote Management of Household Appliances Provides a standard mechanism for users to securely monitor, control, and configure water heaters, refrigerators, air conditioners, and microwave ovens from remote locations, optimizing convenience and efficiency.
-
Smart Office and Facility Automation Facilitates centralized management of appliances in office buildings or multiple-property environments, enabling facilities managers to remotely access and adjust settings.
-
Interoperable Device Ecosystems Supports integration across manufacturers and device types, promoting a vendor-neutral environment that enhances interoperability and future scalability.
-
Cross-Network Collaboration Permits remote access and management through both local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN), enabling flexible, location-independent operation.
-
Resource Sharing and Grouping Allows efficient grouping of devices and collaborative sharing of data and resources, foundational elements for energy optimization, coordinated scheduling, and automated routines in intelligent buildings.
Related Standards
The robust functionality of ISO/IEC 14543-5-102:2020 is closely aligned with and depends upon several related standards within the ISO/IEC 14543 series:
