ISO/IEC 21000-4:2007 specifies conformance points and conformance tests for different parts of ISO/IEC 21000. Based on the various conformance points, it is identified which requirements defined in ISO/IEC 21000 apply to those conformance points. The tests are developed to ascertain whether a particular artifact (such as a piece of software or hardware or a document) meets all the requirements for a specific conformance point or not. ISO/IEC 21000-14:2007 specifies conformance points and tests for ISO/IEC 21000-2:2005, ISO/IEC 21000-3:2003, ISO/IEC 21000-4:2006, ISO/IEC 21000-4:2006/FPDAM 1, ISO/IEC 21000-5:2004, ISO/IEC 21000-5:2004/Amd.1:2007, ISO/IEC 21000-5:2004/FDAM 2, ISO/IEC 21000-7:2004, ISO/IEC 21000-7:2004/Amd.1:2006, ISO/IEC 21000-7:2004/FDAM 2, ISO/IEC 21000-9:2005, ISO/IEC 21000-10:2006, ISO/IEC 21000-10:2006/Amd.1:2006, ISO/IEC 21000-15:2006, ISO/IEC 21000-16:2005, and ISO/IEC 21000-17:2006.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 21000-14:2007 - Information technology - Multimedia framework (MPEG-21) - Part 14: Conformance Testing specifies how to verify that implementations and documents conform to the MPEG-21 multimedia framework. The standard defines conformance points and associated tests that map requirements from multiple MPEG-21 parts to concrete verification activities. It is intended to determine whether a particular artifact (software, hardware or document) meets the requirements for a specific conformance point.
Key topics and requirements
ISO/IEC 21000-14:2007 organizes conformance testing across many MPEG-21 areas. Major technical topics and requirements covered include:
- Conformance point definitions - identification of which MPEG-21 requirements apply to each conformance point.
- Test suites and procedures - normative tests developed to ascertain compliance for artifacts such as parsers, engines and file formats.
- Parser and schema conformance - tests for DIDL (Digital Item Declaration), DII (Digital Item Identification), REL (Rights Expression Language), IPMP (Intellectual Property Management and Protection) and other XML-based syntaxes.
- Engine and runtime conformance - verification of DIP (Digital Item Processing) engines, DIM engines, J-DIXO, and related execution environments.
- Bitstream and binary conformance - tests covering DIA (Digital Item Adaptation) bitstream syntax, binary formats and file-format documentation.
- File format and documentation - requirements for file documentation and areas to be tested during file-format conformance.
- Event reporting and fragment identification - conformance tests for event report descriptions and fragment identification logical models.
- Normative annexes - detailed test cases in annexes (for example, Annex A: DIDL tests; Annex B: DII tests).
Applications and who uses it
ISO/IEC 21000-14:2007 is used by:
- Implementers and product vendors building MPEG-21-compliant players, rights-management systems, parsers and authoring tools.
- Quality assurance and test laboratories creating or running conformance test suites to certify compliance.
- Standards bodies and test developers who define interoperability profiles and certification programs for MPEG-21.
- System integrators verifying that multimedia workflows (packaging, rights expression, IPMP control, adaptation) meet specified conformance points.
Practical uses include validating DIDL documents, testing REL parsers, verifying DIP/DIM engine behavior, and certifying file-format and binary interoperability.
Related standards
ISO/IEC 21000-14:2007 provides conformance tests for multiple MPEG-21 parts, including (but not limited to):
- ISO/IEC 21000-2, -3, -4, -5, -7, -9, -10, -15, -16, -17 (and their amendments). Using ISO/IEC 21000-14 together with the referenced part(s) ensures comprehensive compliance testing across the MPEG-21 multimedia framework.
