ISO/IEC 29341-1-1:2011(E) The UPnP Device Architecture (formerly known as the DCP Framework). It defines the protocols for communication between controllers, or control points, and devices. For discovery, description, control, eventing, and presentation, the UPnP Device Architecture uses the following protocol stack: - UPnP vendor-specific information; - information defined by UPnP; - UPnPspecific protocols such as the Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP) the General Event Notification Architecture (GENA) and the multicast event protocol defined in this document, and others that are referenced. SSDP is delivered via either multicast or unicast UDP. Multicast events are delivered via multicast UDP. GENA is delivered via HTTP. Ultimately, all messages above are delivered over IP. The remaining clauses of this document describe the content and format for each of these protocol layers in detail.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 29341-1-1:2011 - UPnP Device Architecture Version 1.1 - specifies the architecture and protocols that enable seamless discovery, description, control, eventing and presentation of networked devices over IP. Commonly known as the UPnP Device Architecture (formerly the DCP Framework), this standard defines the protocol stack (vendor-specific info, UPnP-defined information and UPnP-specific protocols) and the message formats and processing rules used between control points (controllers) and devices.
Key protocol components covered include:
- SSDP (Simple Service Discovery Protocol) for discovery (multicast or unicast UDP)
- GENA (General Event Notification Architecture) and multicast event protocols for eventing
- HTTP and SOAP for description retrieval and control actions
- Underlying transport over IP (including IPv6 support in an informative annex)
Key Topics
- Discovery: SSDP message formats, NOTIFY (ssdp:alive, ssdp:byebye, ssdp:update), M-SEARCH requests and responses, discovery timing and advertisement behaviour.
- Description: Device and service description documents using HTTP and XML; schema requirements, device/service templates, and datatype handling.
- Control: Control protocol profiles (SOAP 1.1 UPnP profile), action invocation and response formats, error handling and UPnP action/error schemas.
- Eventing: Unicast and multicast event subscription, SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE/SUBSCRIBE renewal semantics, NOTIFY event messages, and event schema.
- Presentation: Mechanisms for device presentation pages and interaction over HTTP.
- Addressing & IPv6: Address selection, Auto-IP considerations, name resolution and an annex for IPv6 support and related operational guidance.
- Schemas & Extensions: Normative and informative schemas (device, service, control, event, error) and guidance on vendor extensions.
Applications
This standard is practical for:
- Consumer electronics and smart home device manufacturers who need standardized discovery/control/eventing (e.g., networked TVs, media servers, smart appliances).
- Software developers building UPnP control points, home gateway middleware, media clients and automation platforms.
- Network integrators and IoT architects implementing interoperable device ecosystems across IP networks.
- Testing and certification labs verifying UPnP behaviour, SSDP timing, SOAP action handling, and event subscription compliance.
Adopting ISO/IEC 29341-1-1 helps achieve interoperability, predictable network behaviour for discovery/control/eventing, and compatibility across heterogeneous IP devices.
Related Standards
- Other parts of the ISO/IEC 29341 (UPnP) series which define device- and service-specific bindings, schemas and profiles.
- Underlying protocol standards referenced: HTTP, SOAP, UDP/IP, and relevant IPv6 RFCs used for addressing and discovery.
