ISO 1071:2015 specifies requirements for classification of covered electrodes for manual metal arc welding, wire electrodes for metal arc welding, tubular cored electrodes for metal arc welding with and without a gas shield, rods for TIG-welding, and rods for oxy-fuel gas welding of unalloyed cast irons. Classification is based on the chemical composition of wires and rods and on the all-weld metal deposit for tubular cored and covered electrodes.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 1071:2015 (CEN adoption of ISO 1071:2015) defines the classification of welding consumables used for fusion welding of unalloyed cast iron. It covers covered electrodes, solid wires, rods, and tubular cored electrodes used in manual metal arc (MMA), metal arc, TIG and oxy‑fuel welding. Classification is based on the chemical composition of wires and rods and on the all‑weld‑metal deposit for tubular cored and covered electrodes. This standard replaces EN ISO 1071:2003 and is intended for use across production, repair and construction welding applications.
Key topics and requirements
- Product scope and symbols
- Product symbols: E (covered electrode), S (solid wire/rod), T (tubular cored wire), R (cast rod).
- Alloy type symbol: C for cast iron.
- Classification formats
- Wire electrodes and rods: three‑part designation (product, alloy type, chemical composition).
- Tubular cored electrodes: four‑part designation (product, alloy type, all‑weld composition, shielding gas).
- Covered electrodes: four‑part designation including effective electrode efficiency and type of current.
- Chemical and metallurgical basis
- Classification relies on the chemical make‑up of filler materials and the resulting all‑weld‑metal.
- Addresses consumables that produce similar or dissimilar weld metal to the parent cast iron.
- Testing and delivery
- Specifies mechanical tests, chemical analysis, rounding procedures, retest rules and technical delivery conditions.
- Annexes provide consumable descriptions and expected minimum tensile/elongation values for dissimilar all‑weld metal.
- Welding practice considerations
- Discusses typical approaches: consumables producing weld metal similar to parent metal (requiring high preheat, e.g., ~550–650 °C) versus dissimilar weld metal (low or no preheat).
Applications and users
- Practical applications
- Production welding of cast components, repair welding of castings in service, and joining cast irons to other ferrous or non‑ferrous metals.
- Who uses this standard
- Welding engineers, materials and metallurgical engineers, consumable manufacturers, welding fabricators, maintenance and repair workshops, quality/inspection teams, and procurement/specification writers.
