1.1 This International Standard specifies the procedure for determining the relative resistance of stainless steels and nickel-base alloys to stress corrosion cracking in a sodium chloride drop evaporation system. 1.2 The method results in a threshold stress to fracture, the magnitude of which can be used to rank the relative performance of different alloys for this environment.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 15324:2008 (ISO 15324:2000) specifies a laboratory procedure - the drop evaporation test - for evaluating stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance of stainless steels and nickel‑base alloys in a sodium chloride environment. The method produces a threshold stress to fracture (stress below which no fracture occurs in 500 h) that can be used to rank alloys’ relative performance under evaporative salt‑deposit conditions (e.g., sea‑spray on hot surfaces).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: A dilute NaCl solution is dripped onto a horizontally held, resistance‑heated tensile specimen under a uniaxial load; wetting/drying cycles concentrate salt and promote SCC.
- Test solution: 0.1 mol/L NaCl (analytical grade) prepared with distilled/deionised water (see ISO 3696); reservoir temperature (23 ± 3) °C; initial pH 5.7–7.0.
- Drop rate: 10 drops/min ±10% to the specimen (drop evaporation system).
- Specimen: circular gauge, 10 mm gauge length, 1.8 mm gauge diameter, fine ground finish (Ra
