ISO 15877-3:2009 specifies the characteristics of fittings made from chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-C) for piping systems intended to be used for hot and cold water installations within buildings for the conveyance of water, whether or not intended for human consumption (domestic systems) and for heating systems under design pressures and temperatures according to the class of application. ISO 15877-3:2009 covers a range of service conditions (application classes) and design pressure classes. It does not apply if the values of the design temperature, maximum design temperature and malfunction temperature are in excess of those given in ISO 15877-1:2009. ISO 15877-3:2009 also specifies the parameters for the test methods to which it refers. In conjunction with the other parts of ISO 15877, it is applicable to PVC-C fittings, their joints and joints with components of PVC-C, other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for hot and cold water installations. It is applicable to fittings of the following types: fittings for solvent cement joints; mechanical fittings; fittings with incorporated inserts.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 15877-3:2009 - Plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations - Chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑C) - Part 3: Fittings (CEN adoption of ISO 15877-3:2009) specifies the characteristics and test parameters for PVC‑C fittings used in building hot and cold water and heating systems. It covers fittings manufactured (typically by injection‑moulding) for domestic and heating service conditions within the design pressures and temperatures defined in ISO 15877‑1:2009. The standard applies to solvent‑cement joints, mechanical fittings and fittings with incorporated inserts and defines material, geometrical, mechanical and performance requirements as well as marking and testing parameters.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability
- Fittings for conveyance of water (including systems intended for human consumption) and heating systems, limited to the design temperature/pressure ranges in ISO 15877‑1.
- Not applicable when design or malfunction temperatures exceed ISO 15877‑1 values.
- Material characteristics
- Requirements for PVC‑C material behaviour (thermal stability, property evaluation) and interaction with metallic components.
- Consideration of influence on water quality for human consumption.
- Geometrical characteristics
- Dimensional requirements for fittings, sockets, flange adaptors and metallic components to ensure interchangeability and correct jointing.
- Mechanical characteristics
- Resistance to internal pressure, hydrostatic test pressure derivation and free‑length determination for performance under service loads.
- Jointing and components
- Specifications for solvent cement joints, mechanical fittings and fittings with inserts; parameters for adhesives and sealing rings.
- Testing & marking
- Parameters for referenced test methods, performance requirements and minimum marking information required on fittings.
Applications
- Who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of PVC‑C fittings and injection‑moulders specifying product design and quality control.
- Plumbing and heating system designers and specifiers selecting fittings for hot/cold water and heating installations.
- Testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies verifying compliance with performance and marking requirements.
- Installers, contractors and building regulators referencing accepted materials and joint types for safe water systems.
- Typical use cases
- Domestic potable water distribution systems, internal building plumbing and low‑temperature heating circuits where PVC‑C is chosen for mechanical strength and thermal resistance within the specified class limits.
