ISO 17637:2016 specifies the visual testing of fusion welds in metallic materials. It may also be applied to visual testing of the joint prior to welding.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 17637:2016 - "Non-destructive testing of welds - Visual testing of fusion-welded joints (ISO 17637:2016)" - is a CEN-endorsed international standard that specifies how to perform visual testing (VT) of fusion welds in metallic materials. It applies to inspection before, during and after welding and defines test conditions, equipment guidance and requirements for recording and personnel qualification. EN ISO 17637:2016 supersedes the 2011 edition and is aligned with ISO 17637:2016.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Visual testing of fusion-welded joints and optionally joint preparation prior to welding.
- Test conditions & equipment:
- Minimum illuminance at the work surface: 350 lx (tinted goggles increase minimum); 500 lx recommended.
- Direct inspection access: eye within 600 mm of surface at an angle not less than 30°.
- Remote inspection options: mirrors, boroscopes, fibre-optic cables or cameras when direct access is not possible.
- Use of additional lighting to enhance contrast and relief.
- Personnel qualification: VT must be performed by qualified and capable personnel; indirect VT personnel are recommended to be qualified to ISO 9712 or equivalent industry levels.
- Inspection stages:
- Pre-weld (joint preparation): verify weld preparation dimensions, cleanliness, surface treatment and fit-up to WPS.
- During welding: inspect each run/layer for cleanliness, visible imperfections (cracks, cavities), correct transitions and gouging depth per WPS.
- Post-weld (finished weld): check cleaning/dressing, weld profile and dimensions, root and surface conditions, and post‑weld heat treatment where applicable.
- Acceptance criteria: Evaluation is made against application/product standards or agreed criteria (e.g., ISO 5817, ISO 10042) - EN ISO 17637 does not itself prescribe numeric defect limits.
- Records: Test records and documentation requirements for traceability and acceptance decisions.
Applications and who uses it
EN ISO 17637 is used across industries requiring welded fabrications and quality-controlled NDT, including:
- Welding inspectors and NDT technicians performing visual inspection.
- Fabricators and welding supervisors for process control and in-process inspection.
- Quality managers and compliance officers for acceptance criteria and record-keeping.
- Clients and specifiers writing procurement, welding procedure specifications (WPS) and inspection plans.
