Overview
EN ISO 2307:2019 - Fibre ropes - Determination of certain physical and mechanical properties (ISO 2307:2019) is a CEN-adopted international standard that specifies standardized test methods for characterizing fibre ropes. It defines procedures to determine key physical and mechanical properties such as linear density, diameter, lay length, braid pitch, elongation and breaking force. When requested by the customer, the standard also provides methods for measuring water repellence, lubrication and finish content. EN ISO 2307:2019 replaces earlier editions and is identical to ISO 2307:2019.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of tests: Clear definitions of which rope kinds are covered and which properties are measured.
- Measurement principles: Procedures for calculating linear density and measuring diameter, lay length and braid pitch.
- Elongation and breaking force: Methods for preparing test pieces, mounting, bedding-in, force-elongation measurement and reporting of actual breaking force.
- Sampling and conditioning: Guidelines for batch composition, sample size, selection, specimen preparation and environmental conditioning prior to testing.
- Additional tests (on request):
- Water repellence measurement procedure
- Determination of lubrication and finish content (including reagents and calculation)
- Apparatus and reporting: Required equipment, alternative procedures for ropes with high breaking forces (annex), and standardized test report content (annexes include reference tension, alternative procedures, force‑elongation coordinates and a sample test report).
- Traceability: Instructions for expression of results (linear density, diameter, elongation, breaking force) and necessary test report items.
Applications and who uses it
EN ISO 2307:2019 is used where repeatable, comparable measurements of fibre rope properties are required:
- Rope manufacturers - quality control, batch verification and product specification.
- Materials and textile testing laboratories - accredited testing and certification.
- Buyers and specifiers - procurement, acceptance testing and compliance checks.
- Maritime, offshore, rescue, climbing and industrial safety sectors - ensuring ropes meet performance and safety requirements.
- R&D and product development teams - comparing constructions, finishes and treatments.
Practical benefits include consistent data for safety-critical design, improved material selection, standardized acceptance criteria and reduced disputes between suppliers and customers.
