ISO 7711-2:2011 specifies requirements for diamond discs used commonly in the dental laboratory for the cutting of dental materials, such as metals, ceramics, plastics or gypsum. In addition, ISO 7711-2:2011 selects five specific shapes with their specific dimensions.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 7711-2:2011 - "Dentistry - Rotary diamond instruments - Part 2: Discs" specifies requirements for diamond-coated rotary discs commonly used in the dental laboratory for cutting dental materials such as metals, ceramics, plastics and gypsum. This ISO/CEN harmonized standard (2011 edition) defines geometry, construction, mechanical requirements and performance-related limits for unmounted and mounted discs, and selects five specific disc shapes with their dimensions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Diamond discs for dental laboratory cutting applications; five specific shapes and dimensions are given (see ISO 7711-2:2011, Clause 5).
- Bore diameter: Unmounted discs use a standardized bore diameter of 1.7 mm.
- Disc blank thickness: Minimum disc blank thickness (uncoated) is ≥ 0.05 mm. Preferred coated blank thicknesses include 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.45 mm.
- Outer diameters (preferred): ISO preferred nominal sizes include 160, 180, 200, 220 mm (Table 3 lists preferred sizes; other sizes optional).
- Material: Disc blanks shall be stainless steel; specific grade and treatment are manufacturer-defined.
- Minimum proof strength: Specified as ≥ 1000 MPa for very thin discs (≤ 0.1 mm) and ≥ 800 MPa for thicker blanks (> 0.1 mm) (Table 5).
- Diamond covering: Grain sizes and colour code follow ISO 7711-3. Width of coating is at manufacturer’s discretion but subject to specified tolerances.
- Run-out limits: Circular run-out - radial and axial (lateral) - of a mounted disc is limited to a maximum of 0.15 mm (measured per ISO 8325).
- Mounting/protrusion: Recommended protruding shank lengths for mounting mandrels (ISO 1797-1) are 10 mm (Type 1) and 15 mm (Type 2) to limit bending and run-out.
- Labeling & manufacturer info: Packaging and published media requirements are specified to support safe, traceable use.
Practical applications and users
- Dental laboratory technicians - selecting appropriate disc shape, grit and size for trimming, sectioning and finishing crowns, bridges, models and prosthetic components.
- Manufacturers of dental rotary instruments - design, production and quality control of diamond discs to meet dimensional, mechanical and run-out criteria.
- Procurement and quality managers - verifying compliance for incoming discs and ensuring compatibility with laboratory handpieces.
- Regulatory and standards professionals - referencing harmonized European/ISO requirements for product declarations and labeling.
