Covers class III requirements for centrifugal pumps of single stage, multistage, horizontal or vertical construction (coupled or close-coupled) with any drive and any installation for general application. Includes design features concerned with installation, maintenance and safety of such pumps including baseplate, coupling and auxiliary piping but excluding the driver, if it is not an integral part of the pump.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 9908:1997 (identical to ISO 9908:1993) defines technical specifications for centrifugal pumps - Class III. Class III represents the least severe class in the ISO pump classification series (Classes I–III) and is intended for general-purpose centrifugal pumps: single- or multistage, horizontal or vertical, coupled or close‑coupled, with any drive and installation. The standard focuses on pump design features affecting installation, maintenance and safety, including baseplate, coupling and auxiliary piping, but excludes the driver unless it is integral to the pump.
Key topics and technical requirements
This standard addresses essential design and testing topics for reliable pump supply and operation:
- Scope & class selection - guidance on choosing Class III based on application, reliability and environmental conditions; purchaser–supplier agreement points are highlighted in bold in the standard.
- Performance and characteristic curves - allowable operating range and guaranteed (rated) point; NPSH basis uses NPSH3 (3% head drop) and requires NPSHA to exceed NPSHR by at least 0.5 m.
- Pressure‑temperature rating - basic design pressure guidance (minimum rating examples given for common materials) and adjustments for material limits; hydrostatic test considerations.
- Mechanical design - casing, wall thickness, flanges, bolting, gasket design and provisions for dismantling without disturbing pipework where possible.
- Rotors, impellers and shafts - impeller types (closed, semi-open, open), securement against axial/circumferential movement, running clearances, and shaft deflection limits to protect seals.
- Sealing and piping - allowance for mechanical seals or gland packing (except glandless pumps); seal cavity dimensions reference ISO 3069; examples of seal arrangements and piping are included in annexes.
- Bearings, lubrication and life - rolling-bearing selection per ISO 76/281 with basic rating life expectations and housing design to prevent contamination.
- Vibration and critical speed - requirements for critical speed margin (e.g., first lateral critical speed) and vibration severity limits during shop testing.
- Documentation, testing and inspection - data sheet templates, shop inspection/tests, preparation for dispatch and purchaser–supplier documentation requirements.
Applications and who uses it
EN ISO 9908:1997 is used by:
- Pump manufacturers and designers specifying Class III centrifugal pumps
- Procurement and engineering teams creating purchase specifications and data sheets
- Commissioning, maintenance and reliability engineers verifying installation and acceptance tests
- Consultants and plant operators in general industrial applications where less stringent Class III requirements are appropriate
