Overview

ISO 7844:1985 specifies a laboratory mechanical test method to determine the relationship between tangential (shear) loading and relative displacement for certain types of grooved vertical joints with connecting bars and concrete infill between large reinforced concrete panels. The standard addresses test specimen construction, apparatus requirements, test procedures (static and cyclic), measurement of displacements and cracking, and the required test report content. It is intended for vertical wall-panel joints that meet the geometric and reinforcement conditions defined in the standard.

Cyclic (alternating) tangential loading to produce stable force–displacement loops or a defined number of cycles, followed by a static test if required.

Measurements and observations: Continuous or frequent recording of relative displacements (mid-length and ends), widening at joint ends, crack locations and development, and maximum shear resistance (expressed in newtons). Tests stop on significant degradation or when relative displacement reaches 20 mm.

Reporting: Detailed description of specimen geometry, reinforcement, fabrication and concreting method, test fixture, loading program, measured deformations, crack development and peak shear resistance per unit length.
