IEC 60034-12:2024 specifies the parameters for eight designs of starting performance of single-speed three-phase 50 Hz or 60 Hz cage induction motors in accordance with IEC 60034‑1 that: - have a rated voltage up to 1 000 V; - are intended for direct-on-line or star-delta starting; - are rated on the basis of duty type S1; - are constructed to any degree of protection as defined in IEC 60034-5 and explosion protection. This document also applies to dual voltage motors provided that the flux saturation level is the same for both voltages. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2016. Aligned with the requirements for explosion protected motors from TC31 WG27 - new clause on methods for measuring locked-rotor current and torque; - new informative annex on the general current and torque characteristics with locked rotor; - new informative annex on correction of voltage and frequency; - aligned with the requirements for explosion protected motors from TC31 WG27.
Abstract
Overview - IEC 60034-12:2024 (Starting performance of cage induction motors)
IEC 60034-12:2024 defines the starting performance requirements for single-speed, three-phase cage induction motors (50 Hz or 60 Hz) up to 1 000 V, intended for direct‑on‑line (DOL) or star‑delta starting and rated for continuous duty (S1). This fourth edition updates the 2016 version and is aligned with explosion‑protected motor requirements from TC31 WG27. The standard specifies eight designs of starting performance and gives limiting values (minimum or maximum without tolerance) for torque, locked‑rotor current and apparent power.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Scope & applicability
- Single‑speed three‑phase cage induction motors, 50/60 Hz, rated voltage ≤ 1 000 V, duty type S1.
- Applies to dual‑voltage motors when flux saturation level is identical for both voltages.
- Covers degrees of protection per IEC 60034‑5 and explosion protection formats.
- Design classifications
- Eight starting‑performance designs (e.g., N, NE, H, HE, NY, NEY, HY, HEY) with defined torque and current/ apparent‑power limits.
- Starting performance parameters
- Minimum starting and breakdown torques, maximum locked‑rotor current and locked‑rotor apparent power (values are limiting with no tolerance).
- Note on inrush: peak transient current at switch‑on can be ~1.8–2.8× steady‑state locked‑rotor current (document provides further detail).
- Measurement and correction
- New Clause 12: methods for measuring locked‑rotor current and torque.
- Annex A (informative): general current and torque characteristics with locked rotor.
- Annex B (informative): correction methods for tests at reduced voltage and/or non‑rated frequency.
Practical applications - why IEC 60034-12 matters
- Ensures consistent specification and selection of motors for applications requiring predictable start behaviour (pumps, compressors, conveyors, fans, material handling).
- Helps manufacturers declare starting torque, locked‑rotor current and apparent power to aid starter sizing (DOL, star‑delta) and supply network impact assessment.
- Supports design and certification of explosion‑protected motors, and provides standardised test methods for laboratories and QA teams.
Who should use this standard
- Motor manufacturers and test laboratories
- OEMs and system integrators specifying motor starting performance
- Electrical engineers, procurement/specification teams, and certification bodies concerned with motor start characteristics and network impact
