IEC 60068-2-53:2010 provides a description of test methods and guidance for testing equipment or components under combined climatic and dynamic conditions. The purpose of combined testing is to investigate to what extent the equipment or components are affected by combined climatic and dynamic tests. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 60068-2-50, published in 1983, the first edition of IEC 60068-2-51, published in 1983 and the first edition of 60068-2-53, published in 1984 and constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with respect to the previous editions of all three standards cited above is to update and group tests. In this way it allows for the possibility to use different kinds of vibration excitation: - sine, random or mixed mode; - or shocks, with different tests for climatic conditions; - cold, dry heat, change of temperature or constant and cyclic damp heat.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60068-2-53:2010 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on environmental testing for electrical and electronic equipment. It provides detailed test methods and guidance for conducting combined climatic (temperature and humidity) and dynamic (vibration and shock) tests. This standard aims to evaluate how equipment and components respond to simultaneous exposure to varying climatic conditions and mechanical stresses, which is critical for ensuring reliability under real-world environmental influences.
This second edition of IEC 60068-2-53 updates and consolidates previous editions and related standards, allowing for flexible use of various vibration excitations like sine waves, random or mixed mode vibrations, as well as different shock types. It covers tests under cold, dry heat, temperature changes, and both constant and cyclic damp heat conditions.
Key Topics
- Combined Testing Methodology: Defines procedures to apply simultaneous climatic and dynamic environmental stresses to equipment and components to identify possible electrical, mechanical, or physical changes.
- Types of Climatic Conditions Covered:
- Cold temperature testing
- Dry heat testing
- Change of temperature cycling
- Constant and cyclic damp heat conditions
- Dynamic Stress Types:
- Vibration (sinusoidal, random, mixed mode)
- Shock (mechanical impacts)
- Test Parameter Selection: Details on selecting parameters such as temperatures, exposure time, vibration frequency, number and repetition of shocks, and specimen operational state.
- Temperature Control Requirements:
- Stabilization criteria before test exposure (e.g., specimen temperature within ±3 K of working space temperature)
- Exposure start conditions for heat-dissipating specimens (temperature changes no more than ±1 K within 1 hour)
- Repositioning and Multi-Axis Testing: Guidelines for repositioning specimens during testing to simulate different axes of vibration or shock under standard climatic conditions.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Information to be included in the test specification and test reports
- Initial and final measurements to evaluate performance changes
Applications
IEC 60068-2-53:2010 is widely applicable in industries where equipment is exposed to complex and harsh environmental scenarios, particularly:
- Automotive and Rail Transportation: Equipment exposed to temperature fluctuations, humidity, and mechanical vibrations during operation and transport.
- Aerospace and Defense: Electronics and components subject to severe vibration and shock in extreme climatic conditions at altitude.
- Consumer Electronics and Industrial Equipment: Ensuring product durability against everyday environmental stresses.
- Telecommunications and Data Centers: Reliability testing of sensitive equipment under combined environmental factors.
- Manufacturing Quality Control: Verification of environmental robustness during product development and pre-certification.
By simulating realistic field conditions in a controlled laboratory environment, this standard helps manufacturers design and validate products that maintain functionality and safety throughout their operational life.
