IEC 60086-6:2020 applies to all chemistries of portable primary cells and batteries standardized in the 60086 series. The purpose of this document is to provide guidance on the proper scientific protocols for testing the environmental performance of batteries; the symbols used to convey messages for collection, recycling, or other ideas; and the aspects and functional unit(s) to be included in assessing the environmental impact of batteries with modern life-cycle analysis techniques
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60086-6:2020, titled Primary Batteries - Part 6: Guidance on Environmental Aspects, is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard applies to all chemistries of portable primary cells and batteries within the IEC 60086 series. It provides comprehensive guidance on assessing and improving the environmental performance of primary batteries by outlining scientific testing protocols, environmental impact assessment methods, and appropriate marking and disposal guidelines.
The purpose of IEC 60086-6:2020 is to help manufacturers, regulators, and environmental professionals ensure that the environmental considerations related to primary batteries are systematically evaluated and addressed throughout their life cycle. This includes environmental testing, disassembly for recycling, packaging, and compliance with global regulations.
Key Topics
-
Environmental Testing Protocols
Offers scientifically validated methods for testing batteries to evaluate their environmental performance, including sample preparation and heavy metal content analysis. -
Symbols and Markings
Defines standardized symbols to properly communicate collection, recycling requirements, and environmental safety information to end-users and recyclers. -
Battery Disassembly and Recycling
Describes recommended disassembly methods and qualifications required to safely and effectively recover components for recycling, minimizing environmental impact. -
Hazardous Waste Management
Outlines criteria for identifying hazardous waste characteristics such as toxicity, ignitability, reactivity, and corrosivity and provides guidelines for proper handling and disposal. -
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
Encourages the use of modern LCA techniques to quantify environmental impacts from raw material extraction, manufacturing, usage, disposal, and recycling stages. -
Regulatory Compliance
Summarizes relevant international and regional legal frameworks, including the Minamata Convention on Mercury, EU directives, and other national regulations governing battery environment-related requirements. -
Packaging Considerations
Advises on environmentally friendly packaging options that maintain safety and quality while communicating essential information effectively.
