IEC 60127-6:2014 is applicable to fuse-holders for miniature cartridge fuse-links according to IEC 60127-2 and sub-miniature fuse-links according to IEC 60127-3 for the protection of electric appliances, electronic equipment and component parts thereof, normally intended for use indoors. Examples of fuse-holder types with different features are given. This part of IEC 60127 applies to fuse-holders with: - a maximum rated current of 16 A; and - a maximum rated voltage of 1 500 V d.c. or 1 000 V a.c.; and - for use up to 2 000 m above sea-level, unless otherwise specified. The object of this standard is to establish uniform requirements for safety and the assessment of electrical, mechanical, thermal and climatic properties of fuse-holders and the compatibility between fuse-holders and fuse-links. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1994, its Amendment 1 (1996) and Amendment 2 (2002). This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - modify the arrangement of the fuse-holder samples in the planes in 13.1.1; - add a new test 13.2.2: Glow-wire ignition test; - change maximum gauge size for standard sheets 3 and 4 from 0,70 to 0,63 in table 5; - change minimum gauge size for standard sheets 3 and 4 from 0,55 to 0,56 in table 5. Keywords: fuse-holders for miniature cartridge fuse-links, sub-miniature fuse-links, protection of electric appliances, electronic equipment and component parts.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60127-6:2014 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies uniform safety and performance requirements for fuse-holders for miniature fuse-links. It applies specifically to fuse-holders used with:
- Miniature cartridge fuse-links in accordance with IEC 60127-2
- Sub-miniature fuse-links as per IEC 60127-3
The fuse-holders covered by this standard are intended for protecting electric appliances, electronic equipment, and their components, mostly designed for indoor use. The scope includes fuse-holders rated up to 16 A, with maximum voltages of 1500 V d.c. or 1000 V a.c., and for operation up to 2000 m altitude unless otherwise noted.
This second edition of IEC 60127-6 replaces the first edition (1994) and its amendments, incorporating technical revisions that enhance testing procedures and safety provisions.
Key Topics
The standard thoroughly covers important areas concerning miniature fuse-holders, including:
- Safety and Protection: Defines protection categories against electric shock (PC1, PC2, PC3), emphasizing integral and enhanced protection mechanisms.
- Electrical Properties: Requirements include insulation resistance, dielectric strength, impulse withstand voltage, and contact resistance to ensure reliable electrical performance.
- Mechanical Characteristics: Stipulates mechanical strength of fuse-holder connections, mounting types, terminal designs (screw, solder, quick-connect), and resistance to vibration and impact.
- Thermal Performance: Details rated power acceptance testing, temperature measurement methods, and correlation with ambient temperature for operational safety.
- Testing Procedures: Includes preconditioning, glow-wire ignition test, needle-flame test, endurance, and climatic tests to simulate real-world usage conditions.
- Compatibility: Ensures fuse-holders are compatible with corresponding miniature and sub-miniature fuse-links, using gauges and dummy fuse-links for verification.
- Marking and Classification: Guide on appropriate marking for fuse-holder identification and classification by rated current and voltage.
Significant technical updates since the previous edition include rearranged sample test planes, introduction of the glow-wire ignition test, and refined gauge size specifications for test sheets.
Applications
IEC 60127-6:2014 standard fuse-holders are widely used in:
- Consumer electronics: Protecting circuits in household appliances, audio/video equipment, and computing devices.
- Industrial electric equipment: Safety protection for control panels, instrumentation, and automation devices indoors.
- Telecommunication devices: Ensuring reliable fuse connections in modems, routers, and network hardware.
- Medical and scientific instruments: Safeguarding sensitive electronic components from electrical faults.
- Automated systems and components: Panels and assemblies requiring standardized miniature fuse protection.
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers and engineers ensure fuse-holders provide effective, safe, and reliable electrical protection, compatible with miniature fuse-links, reducing equipment downtime and enhancing operator safety.
Related Standards
- IEC 60127-2: Defines physical and electrical characteristics of miniature cartridge fuse-links used in conjunction with fuse-holders per IEC 60127-6.
