IEC 60318-7:2022 describes a head and torso simulator, or manikin, intended for the measurement of sound sources placed close to the ear in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 16 000 Hz. The manikin described in this document is intended for airborne acoustic measurements only. It is not suitable for measurements which depend upon vibration transmission paths such as bone conduction, or for measurements requiring the simulation of bone or tissue. This document specifies the manikin in terms of both its geometrical dimensions and its acoustical properties. Only manikins compliant with both sets of specifications are in conformance with this document. IEC 60318-7:2022 cancels and replaces IEC TS 60318-7:2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC TS 60318-7:2017: a) changing the title; b) extending the scope to sound sources close to the ear.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60318-7:2022 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on electroacoustics simulators, specifically the head and torso simulator (manikin) designed for the measurement of sound sources positioned close to the human ear. This standard covers auditory measurement applications in the frequency range of 100 Hz to 16,000 Hz and is intended exclusively for airborne acoustic measurements.
This latest edition updates and replaces IEC TS 60318-7:2017, marking a technical revision that expands the scope to better address sound sources near the ear. The standard meticulously defines the manikin's geometrical dimensions and acoustical characteristics, ensuring precise and repeatable measurements that simulate human hearing accurately.
Key Topics
-
Manikin Construction and Dimensions: The standard specifies the detailed geometrical dimensions for the head, torso, pinna simulators, and ear canal extensions, enabling consistent physical representation for acoustic testing. It provides designs for both anatomically and geometrically shaped manikins.
-
Acoustical Properties: IEC 60318-7:2022 defines free-field and diffuse-field frequency response targets and acceptance intervals. It ensures that the manikin's acoustical behavior closely resembles the human head and torso to measure sound sources with high fidelity.
-
Measurement Scope: The manikin is tailored for airborne sound source measurements near the ear. It is not suitable for vibration-based measurements such as bone conduction or tests requiring bone and tissue simulation.
-
Calibration and Uncertainty Requirements: The document guides the calibration process under defined environmental conditions to ensure measurement accuracy. It also sets maximum permitted uncertainty limits for type approval measurements, supporting reliable acoustic data acquisition.
-
Marking and Documentation: Standards for clear marking on the manikin and comprehensive instruction manuals are mandated, facilitating proper use and traceability during product testing.
Applications
The IEC 60318-7:2022 standard is essential for professionals in audio engineering, hearing aid development, headphone and earphone manufacturing, and acoustic product testing. Practical applications include:
- Assessing the acoustic performance of ear-level audio devices placed close to the ear.
- Standardized laboratory testing for hearing aids, earphones, and other near-ear sound sources.
- Research and development for audio devices with accurate spatial sound reproduction.
- Quality control processes in manufacturing lines for devices interacting with human hearing.
- Ensuring compliance with international measurement protocols to harmonize product performance evaluation worldwide.
By adopting IEC 60318-7:2022, manufacturers and testing laboratories achieve consistent and comparable measurement results critical to product innovation and regulatory compliance.
