This part of IEC 60645 specifies a means of describing the physical characteristics of audiometric reference and test signals of short duration and methods for their measurement. The object of this standard is to ensure that audiometric stimuli of short duration are specified and measured in the same way and that the calibration of equipment using such signals is carried out using defined methods. This standard does not describe the method of use of short duration test signals. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1994. This edition constitutes a technical revision. Specific changes in this edition concern new figures of reference signals and changes in definitions.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60645-3:2007 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the physical characteristics and measurement methods for short-duration test signals used in audiometric equipment. As part 3 of the IEC 60645 series on electroacoustics specifically targeting audiometric devices, this standard ensures uniform specification, calibration, and measurement of brief audiometric stimuli. Its primary goal is to promote consistency and accuracy in hearing assessment through standardized test signals.
This second edition supersedes the first edition published in 1994, offering a technical revision with updated reference signal figures and refined definitions. Importantly, IEC 60645-3:2007 focuses on the signal parameters themselves and the calibration methodology rather than prescribing the usage procedures of these signals in clinical or technical contexts.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
The standard applies to audiometric equipment utilizing test signals of short duration. It provides a framework for describing test signals' physical and temporal characteristics, facilitating uniform calibration and measurement procedures worldwide. -
Terminology and Definitions
IEC 60645-3:2007 introduces clear definitions of terms related to short-duration test signals, including impulse signals, tone bursts, and reference pulses. Precise terminology helps enhance communication and understanding among manufacturers, clinicians, and regulatory bodies. -
Reference Signals
The standard specifies the types of reference signals, focusing on:- Electric reference pulses used as calibration benchmarks.
- Sinusoidal tone bursts representing common audiometric stimuli.
These signals are characterized by their temporal features, amplitude, and waveform shape, allowing for repeatable and accurate measurement.
-
Calibration and Measurement Methods
Defined calibration methods ensure that audiometric devices generate and output test signals that conform to the reference standards. The standard details procedures for measuring signal levels, including peak-to-peak equivalent levels, using standardized instrumentation and techniques. -
Instruction Manual Requirements
Manufacturers are required to provide comprehensive instruction manuals that guide users on how to measure, calibrate, and verify short-duration test signals according to IEC 60645-3 methods.
Applications
IEC 60645-3:2007 plays a critical role in the production, testing, and maintenance of audiometric equipment used in:
- Clinical audiology for accurate hearing threshold estimation using brief auditory stimuli.
- Research environments studying auditory response to short-duration acoustic signals.
- Calibration laboratories that certify audiometric devices meet standardized output protocols.
- Manufacturers developing audiometers and acoustic testing devices to ensure consistent and compliant signal generation.
Adherence to this standard contributes to the reliability of hearing assessments globally, supporting clinicians and healthcare providers in delivering quality audiometric evaluations.
Related Standards
IEC 60645-3:2007 is part of the IEC 60645 series, which covers various aspects of audiometric equipment, including:
- IEC 60645-1: Audiometric equipment – Part 1: Instruments.
- IEC 60645-2: Audiometric equipment – Part 2: Soundproof rooms.
