IEC 60645-3:2020 specifies a means of describing the physical characteristics, in terms of electrical waveforms, of audiometric reference and test signals of short duration and methods for their measurement. The object of this document is to ensure that audiometric stimuli of short duration are specified and measured in the same way and that the calibration of equipment using such signals is carried out using defined methods. This document does not describe the method of use of short-duration test signals. IEC 60645-3:2020 cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2007. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) new figures of reference signals; b) changes in definitions.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60645-3:2020, titled Electroacoustics - Audiometric Equipment - Part 3: Test Signals of Short Duration, is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This third edition supersedes the 2007 edition and introduces updated technical specifications including new reference signal figures and refined definitions.
The core purpose of IEC 60645-3:2020 is to establish uniform methods for describing and measuring the physical and electrical waveform characteristics of short-duration audiometric test and reference signals. These signals are essential for the accurate calibration and performance verification of audiometric equipment, ensuring consistency in hearing measurements across diagnostic, conservation, and rehabilitation applications worldwide.
This standard focuses exclusively on short-duration signals, which are defined as those lasting less than 200 milliseconds, facilitating reproducible and precise calibration practices.
Key Topics
-
Definition of Short-Duration Signals
Covers transient signals under 200 ms such as clicks, tone-bursts, and chirps used in audiometric testing. -
Signal Types and Characteristics
- Click: Transient broadband signals generated by rectangular electrical pulses, useful for measuring auditory evoked potentials.
- Tone-burst: Gated sinusoidal signals with precise rise and fall times, often used in frequency-specific hearing tests.
- Chirps: Signals with time-varying instantaneous frequency, including broadband chirps covering multiple octaves and octave-band chirps aligned with IEC 61260-1 filter bands.
-
Standardized Electrical Waveforms and Measurement Methods
Guidelines on specifying waveform characteristics and procedures for determining peak-to-peak equivalent signal levels using IEC-compliant ear simulators. -
Calibration Protocols
Details methods to ensure reliable audiometric equipment calibration based on these short-duration signals, crucial for maintaining measurement integrity. -
Terminology and Units
Precise definitions for terms like condensation signal, rarefaction signal, and alternating polarity support a common technical language.
Applications
IEC 60645-3:2020 is vital for manufacturers, auditory clinicians, and calibration laboratories involved in the design, testing, and maintenance of audiometric equipment. Its consistent application enables:
-
Calibration of Audiometers and Hearing Devices
Ensuring test signals used in hearing assessments are accurate and reproducible. -
Quality Assurance in Hearing Healthcare
Supporting standardized test stimuli for objective measures like auditory evoked potentials and otoacoustic emission recording. -
Research and Development
Providing a reliable reference for developing new audiometric test signals and equipment. -
Regulatory Compliance
Aligning audiometric products and procedures with global standards to meet safety and performance requirements.
By adhering to IEC 60645-3:2020, stakeholders can enhance diagnostic accuracy, optimize hearing conservation efforts, and improve patient outcomes globally.
