IEC 60793-1-44:2011 establishes uniform requirements for measuring the cut-off wavelength of single-mode optical fibre, thereby assisting in the inspection of fibres and cables for commercial purposes. This standard gives the methods for measuring the cut-off wavelength of fibre and cable. This edition constitutes a technical revision. The main change with respect to the previous edition is the withdrawal of Annex D. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60793-1-1:2008.
Abstract
Overview - IEC 60793-1-44:2011 (Cut-off wavelength)
IEC 60793-1-44:2011 defines uniform measurement methods and test procedures for determining the cut-off wavelength of single‑mode optical fibres. Intended for commercial inspection and quality control, the standard specifies how to measure both fibre cut-off and cable cut-off wavelengths using transmitted‑power techniques and reference scans. This edition (2011) is a technical revision and is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60793-1-1:2008.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Establishes repeatable procedures to quantify the wavelength at which higher‑order modes are sufficiently suppressed in single‑mode optical fibre.
- Definitions: Measured cut‑off wavelength is the wavelength above which the ratio of total power to fundamental‑mode power has decreased to < 0.1 dB (equivalent to the LP11 mode being ~19.3 dB more attenuated than LP01).
- Measurement methods:
- Method A - Cable cut‑off using uncabled fibre (deployment configuration).
- Method B - Cable cut‑off using cabled fibre.
- Method C - Fibre cut‑off on short, uncabled primary‑coated fibre.
- Reference‑scan techniques (used to normalize equipment response):
- Bend‑reference technique (deploy specimen with an added small‑radius bend).
- Multimode‑reference technique (use a category A1 multimode fibre).
- Apparatus and setup: Light source, modulation/launch optics, positioning and support fixtures, cladding‑mode stripper, deployment mandrel, detection optics and detector electronics.
- Procedures and calculations: Transmission power scans across wavelength, optional curve‑fitting for improved precision, and reporting of specimen length, end‑face quality and configuration.
- Reporting requirements: Specific measurement conditions and results must be recorded; cable cut‑off is preferred for system performance assessment.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Fibre and cable manufacturers - production QA and specification compliance for single‑mode fibres and cabled assemblies.
- Test and certification laboratories - standardized methods for comparative testing and vendor acceptance.
- Network operators and installers - performance verification for installed spans where cable cut‑off affects system wavelength selection.
- Procurement and quality teams - acceptance testing and contract verification of optical fibre products.
