IEC 60794-1-2: 2017 applies to optical fibre cables for use with telecommunications equipment and devices employing similar techniques, and to cables having a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors. The prime objective of this document is to provide the end user with an overview about the content of different parts of the IEC 60794-1 series numbered -2X. Table 1 shows the different parts. Table 1 – Document overview Test methods IEC reference General guidance IEC 60794-1-2 Methods E – Mechanical IEC 60794-1-21 Methods F – Environmental IEC 60794-1-22 Methods G – Cable elements IEC 60794-1-23 Methods H – Electrical IEC 60794-1-24 NOTE Several numbers in the test method numbering sequence are missing. The reasons for these omissions are historical. To avoid confusion, the existing numbering sequence has been retained. These documents define test procedures to be used in establishing uniform requirements for the geometrical, transmission, material, mechanical, ageing (environmental exposure) and climatic properties of optical fibre cables, and electrical requirements where appropriate. Throughout the documents, the wording "optical cable" can also include optical fibre units, microduct fibre units, etc. The secondary objective of this document is to provide the end user with useful guidance when testing optical fibre cables. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2013 and IEC 60794-1-20 published in 2014. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition and to IEC 60794-1-20: - the multiple cross-reference tables have been deleted and replaced with a higher level one related to the generic standards; - all pertinent text from IEC 60794-1-20 has been included; - standard optical test wavelengths have been introduced; - this document has been streamlined by cross-referencing IEC 60794-1-1; - the "No change in attenuation" definitions contained in IEC 60794-1-20 have been transferred to IEC 60794-1-1; - the title has been modified to reflect the contents of the new edition. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60794-1-1:2015.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-1-2:2017, titled "Optical fibre cables - Part 1-2: Generic specification - Basic optical cable test procedures - General guidance," is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard applies to optical fibre cables used in telecommunications and related equipment, encompassing cables that combine both optical fibres and electrical conductors. Its primary intent is to provide users with an overview of the testing procedures covered within the IEC 60794-1 series, especially focusing on general guidance for basic optical cable test procedures.
This edition, the fourth, replaces previous versions and integrates significant updates such as standard optical test wavelengths, streamlined references, and consolidated guidance from related documents. It is intended for use alongside IEC 60794-1-1:2015, which covers general generic specifications for optical fibre cables.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Application: Defines the applicability to optical fibre cables in telecoms and similar fields, including hybrid cables with both optical and electrical components.
-
Test Procedure Format: Provides a standardized approach covering object, sample, apparatus, procedure, requirements, and reporting details to ensure consistent testing methodology.
-
Standard Atmospheric Conditions: Introduces two atmospheric conditions frameworks for testing:
- Standard test conditions: Temperature 23°C ± 5°C, relative humidity 20%-70%
- Expanded test conditions (default): Temperature 25°C ± 15°C, relative humidity 5%-95%
-
Calibration and Uncertainty: Emphasizes the necessity for calibration of test apparatus per manufacturer guidelines to minimize measurement uncertainty, including documentation of calibration results.
-
Optical Launch Conditions and Standard Wavelengths: Establishes specific standardized optical test wavelengths to improve uniformity and comparability of test results across different devices and labs.
-
Safety and Environmental Compliance: All tests should adhere to relevant safety regulations and environmental standards to protect personnel and the environment during testing.
-
Comprehensive Test Method Overview: Links to related test methods in the IEC 60794-1 series that classify testing by mechanical, environmental, cable element, and electrical criteria (Methods E, F, G, and H respectively).
Applications
IEC 60794-1-2:2017 serves as a foundational document for:
-
Manufacturers of optical fibre cables to verify that products meet international quality and performance requirements through standardized testing.
-
Telecommunications Operators and Network Engineers, who rely on tested and certified cables to ensure robust and reliable network infrastructure.
-
Testing Laboratories and Certification Bodies conducting uniform and repeatable testing of optical fibre cables, enabling consistent quality assessment worldwide.
-
Research and Development Teams engaged in developing new optical fibre cable technologies, providing essential guidelines on baseline testing procedures.
Ensuring compliance with this standard enhances interoperability, quality assurance, and helps in the evaluation of cables under varying mechanical, environmental, and electrical stresses.
